Another double header. Went on 2 occasions on my trip to Lisbon I stayed in the Alfama neighbourhood, so there is an abundance of smaller restaurants in the area. My first visit, I was just checking out the menus of the places and saw that this one had the special of grilled Sea Bass for 10.50 euro, so in I... More

This little restaurant in Alfama is in a very nice area, close to other little restaurants where you can hear the Fado coming from. The place is nice, the owner gentle and the food is good. We ate the bacalhao in two different ways which was good but not as much as we ate in other restaurants in Lisboa. However... More

Went to this restaurant a few years ago, nice experience, cosy place and decent food. Went back this week for a second visit but it was disappointing. The staff attending the tables (presumably the owner) did a very poor job, having a very arrogant posture i don't think he treated the clients properly being rude at times. Had high expectations... We were doing an exploratory walking tour of the Alfama neighborhood when we stumbled upon Malmequer Bemmequer. We took a peak inside and loved the vibe. The owner greeted us and took good care of us. We had a light lunch (soup, salad, smoked salmon and beer). The soup was the 5 star winner. The bread/spread appetizer was also excellent.... More

It only opens at 1PM (for the moment incorrectly referenced on this page). We arrived too early and were invited to come back at 1, what we respected without discussion. Like this we discovered the typical and terribly sympathetic bar Medrosa d'Alfama at 50m for a beer. Back in the restaurant we decided for Sardines. A must, at least at... More

Had dinner here one night and was one of the best meal in Portugal. The owner was extremely helpful and provided great recommendations on wines and food. The seafood meal I had was amazing as was the wine and the dessert. The meal I had for the price was also incredible. Highly recommend this place, but you may need to... More

We went for lunch. This restaurant once was very well rated, especially about two/three years ago. But actually, it is very normal and the price is little expansive for what it offers.

We went to the restaurant 15 min. before the opening time. The owner was sitting in his car parked infront of the restaurant and reading a paper. He did not move in spite of the fact that he had 6 potential customers standing infront of the restaurant. The waiter told us that we will have to wait until they open.... More

We tried one of their famous Cod mash dishes (there are allegedly 365 ways to cook Cod in Lisbon), and have to say it was one of the most unique flavors I have tasted. It came together great! The owners were very friendly despite my zero knowledge of Portuguese and prices were extremely reasonable. If you want local, high quality... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
