We were contacted while walking Alfama by a gentleman offering good cheap food and Fado music. We ordered two glasses of wine, water, panishca, and had a board of bread, chesse, and olives. We paid 71 euros! According to menu we ate 40 euros. two other couples argue their bills as they told them 3 euros for butter, ect. We... More

DO NOT GO HERE They are just as much of a scam as everyone says they are. Went for an after dinner drink and Fado, says 10€ per person as you come in, no problem, spent that on wine. When the bill came it was 40€! After I complained and tried for an explanation, they had their little play probably... More

We went for only for desert and fado... they charged us €30. The door said minimum €10 spend so we thought we wouldn't be fine. But it's €10 per person minimum spend plus €10 for fado.. so it's a minimum of €20 per person. For a tart that would have cost €0.80 down the road and tasted a lot nicer.... More

Our hotel had recommended a restaurant in Alfama for fado music. It was called Restaurante Taverna D’el Ray, Largo do Chafariz de Dentro 14. Lisbon. There were three or four acts, but it was a bit like Allo Allo at times, as the owner, a woman of a certain age, sang out of tune. The food was very, very slow... More

We made a reservation to go to this restaurant to hear fado. The waiter told us that they had live fado music from 20.00 to 12.00 every night. We were there for 90 minutes and heard only 3 songs. Luckily we went to this restaurant on the second day of our visit in Lisbon so we had some time ahead... More

Padded bills, terrible food, a Hustle! Go anywhere else! They bring food & wine to your table that you did not order. You then have to try to get their attention to remove it. Then you have to argue about being charged. So unlike every other person or establishment we came upon in Portugal & in 20 yrs of travel.... More

The Chinese woman who is probably managing the restaurant lied about an artistic partnership between the Maria Jo Jo and the famous Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila. Actually Martinho da Vila made a duo with the Portuguese Fado singer called Kátia Guerreiro. The House wine for twenty euros a bottle was horrible and made me sick the other day. Besides,... More

I have been there twice, and did not have bad experience. At least they allowed us just for drinks and appetizers; without any requirement of main dish. (Although the price for chese and pasteis de bacalhau for 2 people almost equal to a main dish). Note that they charge you with the minimum price of 10 € per person for... More

This place is part of a scam. We got a taxi to go to a highly recommended fado club which we knew was expensive. Our taxi driver told us that he was a fado singer and that he knew a better place which was not a rip off. I stupidly believed him and he took us to this empty restaurant,... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
