We found this restaurant with my boyfriend, by accident. There were no other people and english translation of menu was poor. But, the owner was kindest person and the meal was soo delicious. We found this restaurant located on the second floor so we could not see what it looked like until we went upstairs and found it almost crowded which of course is a good sign. We had lunch there. The service and the food was very good indeed, much better than we expected in such a tourist place.

My husband and I found the best little hidden gem when we wondered off from the tourist scene and we found Restaurante Alcaide. The food was outstanding and the ladies who ran the restaurant were extremely pleasant and friendly. The restaurant itself is very humble but don't let that fool you from their amazing food. Well worth the find!

Unpretentious, hidden in the jumble of back streets below the castle, we would all go here again. Six of us on a birthday bash, two who have spent extensive time in Africa. The flavours of Angola and Mozambique, with Portuguese skill and lovely ambience. This little place deserves to do well.

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
