My wife and I stopped here for a late lunch because we saw sardines being freshly barbecued over open coals. Furthermore, there was a vacant table on the outside veranda which looked very attractive. Our meals of tomato and onion salads followed by the sardines were delicious. Together with a glass of really good house white wine and coffees our... More

We went here for the fado music and which we appreciated very much. There were four different artists who entertained us about half the time. Plus one waiter with a spectacular base voice. We got an excellent table and chose catch of the day which was a splendid red snapper together with cooked potatoes and veggies. Service was very efficient.

We had sardines on the wood barbecue for lunch which were fresh and delicious and so went back the following evening which was a Friday. The fish of the day was excellent, grouper and trigger fish and we had a very pleasant bottle of Portuguese chenin blanc. The entertainment was madeiran singers with banjo, mandolin and guitar. The restaurant was... More

I really wanted some properly cooked sardines; in a charcoal grill. This was the only place that seemed to do it, you could see them cooking them. They were very good so i also tried the grilled octopus this was as it should be, for grilled fish this is the place; the gin & tonic is also reasonably priced.

My wife and I had a great meal at Arsenio's. I went there for lunch many years ago but don't remember it being as good as it was last week. It's really worth going to, the good sign should be that there was no one outside trying to get people coming in to the restaurant. The food is really tasty... More

We ate here last night after walking up and down the Old Town. So glad we decided to eat here. We sat inside as the outside tables were full but it ended up being the perfect spot. A group began to play their local Fado music with alternating people signing. They were amazing and the atmosphere felt so 'Madeiran' We... More

The restaurant is very traditional in the old part of Funchal, a place full of character. Good food too.

We spent some time trying to work out the relationship between the guy who 'collected' customers, the chef who cooked the fish on a wood fire on the terrace, the maitre d' and the very 'lived-in' old guy who wandered around the front of the restaurant getting in the way of the staff, smoking, and looking as if he used... My husband and I ate a late lunch/early dinner here twice. It's a great time to avoid the people coming to hear the live Fado. We had the privilege to meet and chat with the owner. He recommended some items and EVERYthing was delicious and cooked to perfection. We had such a great time, that we came back. It was... More
