This is the fourth year we have frequented O Portao, each time we visit we are treated like good friends, we are welcomed by all the staff, the food is all freshly cooked, delicious sauces, our favourite being the Chef's special fillet steak this is always cooked to perfection and the first dish we have each time we return here,... Visited here on the strength of a personal recommendation and was not disappointed. Hospitality and food were both excellent. A small restaurant but clearly very popular - the owner and his assistant couldn't have been more charming. Perhaps marginally more expensive than some locally but worth it. Altogether a delightful experience. For dessert, the zabaglione came in a huge bowl... More

Our first night in Madeira, and we chose this place as it was close by to our hotel, and had good Trip Advisor reports. It is a small room, and we were lucky to get a table. We started with the local bread which was toasted with garlic, and delicious. I had a fillet steak with pepper sauce, and it... More

A really authentic place, great hospitality with food to match. Such a nice atmosphere, helped by the service throughout, made you feel at home and wanting to stay longer. We will definitely revisit on our next trip and I'm it will be just as good.

A warm welcome to a pristine restaurant. Good choice menu, 50% seafood. We both had the seafood rice. This was a large dish of shell fish - loads of king prawns, mussels, clams, squid and crab with rice, in a seafood broth. Absolutely spectacular. I made one heck of a mess of the table cloth! We had complementary glass of... More

This is a small intimate place to eat. Not many tables and close to each other. But I liked that feel, as it was obvious that people came back regularly, as there were lots of greetings with customers and waiters. I always think this is a good sign that we are going to get great food. I was not disappointed.... More

Ate here based on Guidebook and TripAdvisor recommendations. Had the green soup with sausage and limpets for starters, then pork with madeira sauce and meat skewers for main, shared a delicious Zabaglione dessert. Free madeira after. Service very good, the football being on could have been an issue but didn't seem to be as I would expect. Friendly accomodating staff.... More

From the delicious fillet steak flambé, fresh fish of the day, caldeirada, espada, espetada, and the exceptionally tasty local sardines this restaurant has a good range of dishes and the hardest part of any visit is deciding what to try. It is very friendly without being pushy and the service is excellent. We have eaten here many times and always... More

Love that staff here do not pressure you in from the street unlike most others. Food is freshly cooked and vegetables are well prepared - not over cooked. I am told the grilled limpets and fish skewer were excellent whilst the steak Diana was beautiful and tender with a lovely mushroom sauce. The passion fruit pudding was different to previous...
