A restaurant in more of the traditional Greek way of the waiter showing what they've got in the kitchen for the lunch/dinner specials. Baked items such as Moussaka is freshest for the lunch hour while the grills (roasted meats) would be great in the evenings. Both items are excellent choices. My favourite dish is their roasted lamb. The salad is... More

The owner was very nice and explained everything. The food was good. The prices were very low. The owner brought out some orange cake at the end (for free) which was very delicious.

Constantino was incredibly gracious and kind as he suggested what we could get in his cash only restaurant with our limited funds on the day of our arrival during a holiday and strike and unable to get cash out of an ATM. The food was delicious, so good, we came back the next day, now fully funded with cash, and... More

On our way to the Acropolis Museum, our guide recommended this sweet little cafe. There are tables for about 8 groups on the inside and curb side dining outside. Run by a loving Greek Family (with an American daughter in law from Iowa), we arrived after the noon crush. Jennifer, walked us through the selections that had been prepared for... More

No frills home cooked greek food. The food was straighforward grilled fish and meat. Tasty and plentiful at a good price. Wine at 4 euros a 500ml carafe was drinkable. No desserts apart fom yoghurt. This is not fine dining and we were in and out in just over an hour. Service was very friendly. No credit cards.

Although we had another dozen recommended restaurants on our list, as soon as we ate here the first time, we knew we had to return the next day for more of the same. The salmon is prepared delicious with a good portion at a very reasonable price. The stuffed red pepper looks simple, but is very tasty and the eggplant... More

Our local connection in Athens steered us away from the oppressive tourist cafes and pointed to this wonderful family-run restaurant. Instead of handing out a permanent menu, they offer the dishes cooked that day. There are multiple types of succulent meats on the rotisserie and various hot dishes on the warmer. The portions were generous, and the family was very... More

Small family run place a block from the entrance to the Acropolis, and directly behind the Acropolis Museum. We sampled a variety of offerings and everything was very good. Portions were large. Price was very reasonable. Our waitress was the daughter-in-law of the owner. She was attentive and helpful without hovering.

The restaurant is only 2 mins walk from where we stayed, the lamb I ordered was superbly cooked (with crispy skin) so I had to share between us.

Staying in Thissio / Makriyanni

Neighbourhood Profile
Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centrepiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.
