We have just retired from running a big English pub for many years, we decided to take a cheap flight to Chania where we ended up spending Christmas Day at THE BLACK LANTERN. We were very happy with the food, it was fresh, hot and well delivered, all in all a very memorable day and we can whole heartedly recommend... More

this place deserves its good reviews. we ate here twice in the week and it was great. the atmosphere is relaxed and there is a good menu covering traditional Cretan food as well as catering for a more British palate. the prices were really good and the portions were filling. the food tasted great. loved it

My wife and I was in Maleme again for the month of September and ate at the Black Lantern every night except Tuesday's when it is closed. The food is beautiful well cooked and plentiful. The menu is so varied we could eat something different every night if we wanted to but I have my favourites which was eaten on more... More

We went there because somebody in the hotel recommend us to go. The owner was a English man not very friendly and quite unpolite. I ask a side salad like starter and fried calamari as a main. And the calamari was garnished with a side salat. (something that you can say to the guest) also the fried calamari was frozen... More

We visited the Black Lantern on two occaisions during a weeks visit. I have varied views on the experience. On each occaision I had the Mixed Grill, which on the first occaision was good. On the second occaision, on reflection was more like mixed charcoal. Other dishes selected were Stir Fry Prawns & Greek Salads. Wine was very good, beer... More

Well the English owner was really not being nice and seemed like he didn't want our company. Perhaps because we had a 3 year old - I don't know. But in general he was like this all evening. The calamares was like rubber and all dishes was served with salad. Is nice - but if we had been told we... More

Arrived late at our accommodation in Maleme knowing that a very important football match had already started. The Hotelier directed us to The Black Lantern just down the road. We were warmly welcomed and a place in front of the TV found for us immediately. Although it was after 10:30pm and the kitchen staff were obviously clearing up, owner Graeme... More

An enjoyable evening with some lovely food, not run of the mill Greek taverna. Interesting surroundings and a very interesting owner.

Good food and an interesting manager from south/west London, who will either leave you to yourselves or treat you as an old friend - whatever you prefer. The menu is varied but based on wholesome local dishes. Between us we pretty much went through the specials board over a couple of visits. All very tasty and filling! Well worth a... More
