Traditional Swedish food. Not a very big menu for lunch but they have a daily lunch special on weekdays. I had the S.o.S. for starters (herring) with dill potatoes and biff lindström for the main course. Beautiful venue on two floors. Our table was on the lower floor and there are quite steep steps leading down there so if that... More

Nice restaurant with friendly staff. They have a "Dish of the day" at lunch Monday to Friday where you can have a nice meal for 135 SEK. I went on a Thursday, the dish was pea soup and pancakes for desert (traditional dish on Thursdays). It was really good and not that expensive for the location and the quantity and... More

If you stay a few days in Stockholm you really should go here. The building itself has so much character, and they serve wonderful traditional, Swedish dishes. We had our engagement dinner here with the whole family and I love coming back. Always go for the lunch if you are concerned that a place is pricy.

This is one of the restaurants in Old Stockholm with the most known history. Bellman (the perpetually drunk poet and legend) used to hang out here. The meatballs á la Zorn (a famous painter) are the stuff of legend. This is no cheap place to eat, but much cheaper actually that I'd have expected. Book a table in advance if... More

This place has been serving food since 1722. Thats almost 300 years. I m pretty sure they will be open for a few years to come. We, a party of 3, tried roasted chicken with mashed potatos for lunch, and we agreed that it was perfect. Great food to affordable prices! I´ll be back

I ordered the meatballs, and was very satisfied with that. Nice and cozy place with a charming history in the walls. I thought the staff was to some extent rude.

When leaving I realized that the food in general was too greasy. I had the HÄLLSTEKT ENTRECOTE. I saw the next door table having "RÖDTUNGA +Flounder Meuniere". It looked fairly too much greasy as well. Not familiar with this standard at "Freden". Hope that "Freden" takes a look at this review.

At Den Gyldene Freden we have served authentic Nordic home cooking since the opening in 1722. Famous cultural personalities, tourists and local regulars visit our historic facilities in Gamla Stan to enjoy the fine food and the genuine atmosphere - for everyday or special occasions. We, the people who work at Den Gyldene Freden are very proud of our heritage and passionate about refining classic courses into modern cooking. Our philosophy is based on the idea that one must make time to cook - and eat - fine food. We make room for international influences, but our base is the Nordic kitchen interpreted in our own personal manner, with great respect for flora and fauna.

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
