I was a bit unsure about this place, as it is in the middle of the old town, where a lot of tourist traps are present. Also the fact that this is the oldest restaurant in Sweden (they say in the world) present in the...More

Not many restaurants around the world have history as rich as this. Besides the ancient history, the restaurant is well maintained to honor its story. Now the food. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I am pescatarian but I had to sample a meatball from my brother. It was...More

at 1722 restaurant with wooden chairs and tables from 1919, and stories galore. Den Gydene Freden (lightly translated to "Golden Peace"), is a landmark. The Swedish Academy (of Nobel fame) comes here every Thu to have Pea Soup. While i had delectable pheasant patty with...More

We time travelled back to the 1700s and enjoyed a delicious dinner in the main dining room. The meatballs were wonderful. The service was very helpful and friendly. But fine early. We closed the restaurant at 9pm.

We were in Stockholm for four days and long before our arrival had booked dinner in Den Gyldene Freden. The entire evening was spectacular! My wife and I both had Zorn's Meatballs which were absolutely delicious. For a starter, we shared a bowl of mushroom...More

THE FOOD: A bit disappointing considering the price and the hype we were given before arrival. Having been informed that the restaurant was one of Stockholm's oldest, the old stomping ground of several Swedish artists and greats of literature, we came in with high expectations....More

Supposedly Stockholm's oldest restaurant. Good, surprisingly simple food. Old world service. Despite reservation had to wait for table but that was pretty pleasant sitting outside watching the pedestrian traffic. Was a bit disappointed that it wasn't a wow place, but it was fine. Maybe not...More

Said to be a restaurant since 1722. Well the tables in the front rooms are for sure from this period. We were 8 persons crammed down at two tables put together designed for 4 persons, max 6. And then the persons in the middle had...More

Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home
to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central
island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small
island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous
Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit
touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting:
take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and
through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest)

At Den Gyldene Freden we have served authentic Nordic home cooking since the opening in 1722. Famous cultural personalities, tourists and local regulars visit our historic facilities in Gamla Stan to enjoy the fine food and the genuine atmosphere - for everyday or special occasions. We, the people who work at Den Gyldene Freden are very proud of our heritage and passionate about refining classic courses into modern cooking. Our philosophy is based on the idea that one must make time to cook - and eat - fine food. We make room for international influences, but our base is the Nordic kitchen interpreted in our own personal manner, with great respect for flora and fauna.
