Helsinki is expensive, especially if you eat at some of the trendy restaurants in the main tourist areas. There is nothing trendy about Kolme Kruuna, in fact when you first enter the restaurant you may be tempted to turn around as it looks like the...More

Came into this restaurant after reading some very good reviews. And to assure its dinners they also had the sticker of approval from trip advisor few years ago. Firstly the salmon soup was an excellent starter. The cream was not over powering and the subtle...More

Nice vintage atmosphere, with quiet tables and sofas, low lights and finnish families or group of friends sorrounding you. They serve satisfying portions of tasty and nourishing typical food, mainly meat (great venison sausages with mashed potatoes). The price is around 25€ per person if...More

We had a hearty, delicious Finnish meal. Salmon soup, meatballs and a cooked pork dish. Dessert was a blueberry pie with ice cream. Service very friendly and efficient. Lovely way to complete our travel to Helsinki with this traditional meal at a restaurant frequented by...More

Quite small but elegant. Beautiful glass works on windows. Decoration from 1950's. Happy smiley faces - good atmosphere, unfortunately not up to service personnel. . Traditional dishes well made.

Great food! We had the Meatballs, duck and sirloin and all were perfectly cooked and well accompanied. The risotto that the duck came with was so creamy and the sauce; amazing. The wine is also very good but be sure to book as it was...More

Lives up to positive reviews - delicious traditional fare and reasonably priced. Situated in a plain, unfussy pub-like decor with friendly and helpful staff - suggested a wine over one we'd chosen - good choice. Dishes were delicious (reindeer tenderloin, pike-perch, traditional Finnish salmon soup)....More

One of the positive surprises of our holiday, this restaurant was everything Trip Advisor promised - good atmosphere, friendly service, Finnish attention to detail, excellent beer and wine, but on top of that the food was better than many traditional restaurants in Helsinki charging considerably...More

Description
The story of Kolme Kruunua ('three crowns') began in 1952, when restaurateur Irja Örn (1910-1992) together with her husband decided to renovate their café and bar Liisan Baari and turn it into a restaurant. Many still feel that the restaurant serves the very best meatballs, "Pyttipannu" ('hash') and fried Baltic herrings in the city. The well-preserved interior of Kolme Kruunua was designed by artist Emil Ruokolainen (1895-1968), who was a renowned decorative painter in his time. His artwork can be found, for instance, in several Finnish schools and churches. In the restaurant, his craftsmanship can especially be seen in the beautifully polished mirror hanging on the back wall. The glass paintings decorating the windows of Kolme Kruunua were designed and painted by artist Fritz Hilbert (1898-1981), who later became the artistic director of the S. Wuorio decorative painting company. Kolme Kruunua is one of the few restaurants in Helsinki where the demographic of the customers ranges from twentysomethings to over 80-year-olds. Some of the elder customers who remember their fathers spending time at the restaurant, now, in their twilight years, enjoy the atmosphere of the place themselves. In mid-1990s, the old wine bar was replaced with a bar counter, but otherwise the original interior with its wood paneling, old lamps, glass paintings and glass decorations has been preserved.
