Lovely historic café, to sit and enjoy cake and people watch while listening to the live pianist. Would recommend the strudel.

We were there for dinner. Tried to, cause it was 9:45 PM and Kitchen was closed. DOn't understand how in an European Capital, full of Turims, Restaurants close so early. Has to Café Central, despite the fact that we were there one minute, and on the other we weren't anymore, cause we had to go and find somewhere to dinner,... More

To the managemant of the cafe Central: =Self-standing notice board with small size fonts warning that you should enter the cafe only when the waiter comes for you= This should be written in LARGER font, so the people WITHOUT glasses can SEE IT and READ IT. Your waiter was arrogantly imaptient with us, sending us back to the entrance door... More

Me and my friends went to visit the Cafe, where you have to wait to be seated. We only had to wait about 10 minutes which was no big deal, and the waiters were very nice to re-assure us continuously that he hadn't forgotten us. We had only some drinks,Melange and Hot chocolate which were delicious! Unfortunately we didn't try... More

We queued for around half an hour as we heard that this was an iconic cafe in Vienna. The building (inside) is lovely and we very much enjoyed our experience. Although it was extremely busy the service was very good and efficient. We stopped for cake and a hot drink - both of which were delicious (the hot chocolate pudding... More

Our first visit to Cafe Central was mid-afternoon for cake and something hot to drink. The queue outside was a little daunting but it moved quickly and as so efficiently managed by the staff and it was definitely worth the wait! The atmosphere and interior of the building was beautiful and the staff super helpful and polite and the cakes... More

Beautiful cakes and lovely surroundings with gentle piano music in the background. The staff were very helpful and friendly. A lovely way to spend an hour or two after sightseeing.

This famous traditional café with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature café was a meeting point for all ages, regular guests, Viennese locals and visitors. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialities, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience. Daily Live Piano Music from 5pm on! Reservations are strongly recommended to avoid waiting time - upon availability. Many thanks in advance for your understanding!

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
