I tried the lamb tartar - it was unremarkable at best - it had a rather bland taste and many small harder flaky bits in it - perhaps spice. It would be large enough for a meal, though. Lentil soup was boring and watery. Pasta with mushrooms and aubergines was OK but not something I would come back for. The... More

After having a poor meal the previous night and looking on Trip Adviser to find somewhere close to our hotel we identified this gem. The food was excellent we took recommendations from the waiter and weren't dissapointed as our German Isnt that great, his English was perfect. In fact I would say the food was as good as I've ever... More

My husband and I chanced upon this restaurant one evening after enjoying the museum district. It was the very best food we had in Vienna. Although the menu is only in German we by luck ordered some amazing dishes. We had our first excellent salad which we split It was full of fresh ingredients that really went well together. I... We found Benjaminis by chance, while strolling. It looked promising, so we decided to give it a try. We were very pleasantly surprised! From traditional Viennese food (Wienerschnitzel) to home-made pasta and Syrian specialties, all we've tried there (we've visited a couple more times since we found it) has been superb. It's a family-owned business, and they are very nice,... More

Giving away this address will not please many regulars but this hidden place deserves the highest recognition, as everyhing here is delicious and freshly done. I have chosen it as my lunch haven. The owner himself cooks, fortunately! A fashionable viennese deli guru, well-known local cooks and other restaurant-owners can be sighted here, it says a lot. The crowd is... More

Staying in Mariahilf

Neighbourhood Profile
Vienna’s sixth district hosts high street shopping heaven and pedestrian area Mariahilfer Strasse. The weirdest local building is probably the city aquarium Haus des Meeres, housed in one of Vienna’s six remaining World War II defense towers, and topped with a rooftop bar that offers stunning views over Vienna and the centre. One of the most historic sites in the area is the passageway of 18th century Raimundhof with its small shops and cafés. It leads from Mariahilfer Strasse to Windmühlgasse. For a glimpse into the world of early 19th century theater, visit Semperdepot, the former depository for theatre decoration, which now hosts art exhibitions and fairs.
