Evenings in The Reel have become a regular feature of our visits to Kirkwall: the fact that this venue is close to our holiday house is a bonus, but it is the music and the atmosphere that is the main attraction - although the beer...More

Amongst all the food and coffee shops in Orkney this one offers a bit more, tradition and some ‘reel’ home cooking. Firstly, food is nearly all made on the premises. The scones came out of the oven as we waited and were delicious. If you...More

Went here for a takeaway coffee for 2 and cost nearly £8!! That's ridiculously expensive! Syrups not that good anyway!

Only did coffee and cake but thoroughly enjoyed. All that we sampled very tasty. Would recommend as a great break from the high street or history.

We had a delicious lunch in this absolutely charming cafe in the middle of Kirkwall. My husband enjoyed a local draft beer and I opted for the hot chocolate. It is always nice to have a true rich chocolate drink with real whip cream rather...More

Although small, it has a great atmosphere. There is so much going on and the live performances are special. However seats can be at challenging to secure If during the day, a great place for a hot chocoholic and a cake

Cafe by day, live music by night - I assume the name comes from the musical forms of ‘Jigs and Reels’ as it has live traditional music (folk and jazz) in the evening. We had a lovely coffee and a piece of no so remarkable...More

Thank you very much for your review. Yes, that is where the name 'The Reel' comes from! The building also houses 'The Wrigley Sisters' School of Music' upstairs and a music shop. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit, and hope you make it...More

Description
The Reel In 2002 the Wrigley Sisters returned to Orkney to live and set up their business, and in 2004 The Reel was established, allowing them to ‘put something back into’ the community of Orkney.’ "With both lasses having now settled back in Orkney their attention has turned to managing the ‘Reel’ – the sisters’ Centre of Music on Broad Street in Kirkwall. The centre has experienced phenomenal success in the few years it has been open, to the extent that it has recently moved to the building formerly occupied by VisitOrkney, next to St Magnus Cathedral. "Aswell as a being home to many folk & blues sessions and the Orkney Strathspey and Reel, The Reel also holds various classes in many different instruments taught by a wealth of talented teachers. The Reel offers and encourages a fully ‘inclusive’ approach, catering for all members of the community, especially families, and all age groups. The existing aesthetics, atmosphere and management approach fully encourages, supports and positively impacts upon this ethos. The management’s existing attitude and approach to providing a high quality and friendly customer service is also considered exemplary.
