This restaurant sits on the West side of the old city of Orvieto. The dining room is an ancient Etruscan cave, carved out of the tufo rock upon which the city is built. The wide-ranging menu features pasta dishes and roasted meats, including game. Through the door and down the stairs, we were greeted with the sight of fresh pasta... More

Had a party of 4 and ate dinner here. We were seated right away. Food and service was very good. Menu had a lot of game meats listed. You are eating in an underground cave which makes for a very interesting atmosphere.

The steak dish arrives and immediately, you can smell the truffles, it's not just oil, it's the real bits. I had mine with grilled vegetables and it was healthy with olive oil and herbs. It's very hard to find parking in Orvieto. So be prepared to walk. If you come for lunch, the view in the day is amaZing

If you are looking for an out of the way spot in a quaint and charming Italian village this is it. Located in an underground cave this treasure of a spot is family run and owned and the proprieters take great pride in their ingredients and cooking. My husband and I went and we both enjoyed our selections. The wine... More

Stopped on way from Rome to Tuscany on recommendation of hotel... dissapointing tourist trap ... waiter cautiously suggested we not have the fish because it wasn't fresh... pasta with boar was watery and tasteless ... ambiance only good part

We lucked out. I selected this restaurant primarily because it was close to the parking deck. However, we soon realized what a fortunate choice it was, and not just due to its location! First, there is the experience of eating in what is part of the underground tunnel system of Orvieto. This place, as others point out, is essentially in... More

The restaurant is situated deep inside the hill, and one has to go down quite a ways into the rock. The place appears to be carved out of the surrounding stone and truly feels like you are inside an underground cavern. The setting is thus quite interesting. The food is very good, service excellent and is well worth a visit... More

After our underground Orvieto tour I asked if there were any restaurants in one of the caves. The tour guide recommended this restaurant. As it was in September, we didn't need reservations. We arrived at 7:30 to an empty place but it soon filled up. This was a fantastic place. The atmosphere was exceptional and the food really good. This... More

Heard about this restaurant on the Caves tour. We went on a whim. What a great night. Good food, amazing atmosphere, great wine and SO cheap. Well worth it.

How often do you get to eat really good food in a cave? Le Grotte is a wonderful restaurant, just steps away from the elevator in Orvieto. The pizzas were really good, the wine selection very nice and the service was perfect. There are a lot of good restaurants in Orvieto but this is worth visiting

Description
In the historic center and medieval heart of Orvieto, 10 meters from the elevator to the Campo della Fiera parking lot, there is a cave in the cliff that was carved out by hand. This atmospheric place witnessed the craft of rope making over many centuries. Today this cave is a distinctive and one of a kind restaurant where one can taste traditional flavours made new in unique and harmonious combinations, such as: Truffles, porcini mushrooms, wild game. Or, if you prefer, you can enjoy a variety of seafood, skillfully prepared, or take in the smokey aromas of our pizza baking in wood, brick ovens. We serve the highest quality products and excellent wines from our well, stocked "cantina". The rooms are made up of the original stone walls and vaulted ceilings of the cave and which fancifully meander onto different floors. It's winding, welcoming, rich in charm and history. In addition, we have a summer veranda which offers eating outside where you can enjoy the beauty of the landscape that surrounds the cliff.
