Alan and others were very kind to offer us toasties, even though it was late. Must say toasties were delicious. Alan is a very kind man with great local knowldge, which he shared very willingly and helped us out of a tight spot. Thanks Alan...and Paulien.More

A nice quiet relaxed restaurant where me & my ex and his dad tried the famous Tihoi Burger with Chips and my ex mother in law ate a Hawaiian Burger. Very good food and good service with a smile. Friendly owners too and very polite....I loved the brief but interesting visit. I highly recommend!!!More

Friendly hospitality, great atmosphere. Low key country pub. We stayed here so we could park our motorhome in the camping section. had a meal and a cheeky drink. Meals were HUGE! We had 2x half steak dinners and a seafood platter. The fish in the...platter was awful it tasted like fish fillets from the supermarket. The rest of the dish was really lovely and I wasn't that hungry anyway. The steak dinners were huge. 1 wasn't cooked properly but this issue was promptly rectified with a smile. Every thing else cooked well. Good selection of drinks too and the owner seemed to have a great relationship with the locals which spoke well for the bar.More

Good spot for camping with toilets 24/7. Terrible customer service, unfortunately we did not feel welcome by the owners, not entirely sure if they don't like non-kiwi guests (we've been living in NZ for years and never been treated this way) but they were rude...and didn't seem happy to have us there - we were the only guests that night. Sadly, we won't be coming back.More

Friends had recommended stopping at the Tihoi Tavern for a meal and we were very glad we did. Friendly welcome and yummy crumbed scallops (6 for entree) served with tartare sauce and a very generous serving of crispy fries with aioli, so generous we didn't...see the bottom of the dish. The staff were helpful and told us about the hunting trophies and sporting groups who regularly meet here. There was an enclosed outdoor play area ideal for children. If you are travelling on SH 32, Tihoi Tavern is a must stop.More

Planning a little road trip I went looking for somewhere to pitch a tent along the way. Tihoi Tavern came up on google and I chose to give it a go. I am so glad I did. I was greeted by Bex the bartender and...treated to great service and conversation. The Freedom camping area is great. No fascilities aprt from when the tavern is open. But this didn't bother me for a place to crash. The new owners started only 4 months ago and are doing a great job. they have decided not to charge for the camping space. It is completely free. All they ask is that you respect the space. I fully encourage anyone using this space to pop in and get a drink and a meal. The prices are very good and the food was great! Let's encourage more places to be camper friendly! Thank you Tihoi Tavern, I'll be back!More

Our local Vintage Car Club enjoy the food and ambiance so much here at the Tihoi Tavern....not too long a drive from Taupo..... that we have booked again for our next rally in August! The staff put the BBQ on especially for our group [we...can get at least 40 people along with their prized vehicles]...and frankly - we are all pretty reluctant to leave! Awesome wee rural pub!More

Long trip, needed food. Good little country tavern, Had some really good chips and good cheese/onion toasted sandwiches. The coffee was average and could be better but overall a worthwhile stopover. Self contained camper vans can park free overnight.

So, you left Auckland almost by three hours, it’s dark, you have spend one hour driving in what seems to be loops. You got to get to this tavern, it says it’s open until late but it’s very late now…let’s hope it’s still open. They...say you can sleep at the back. It should be somewhere around here… you pass the point that google maps says… Your eyes are tired, your mind starts “drifting”… until you see the lights!! You drive quietly, not sure if you are disturbing at that time. Imagine it’s real dark around you, the sky and the stars are the only light other than the tavern. You park the car at the front and you can already feel the warmth coming from that place, the wood that surrounds the Tavern. It’s mystical, seems to jump back in time, when concrete wasn’t an option. You can see someone inside, you open the door, and walk your first step in. Everything warms up, from your bones to your soul. A wood real f#cking authentic Tavern, with the most local people you’ll could possibly find. The owner, Mike, can feel the cold coming out of you… but he can warm you up with a big smile. What can you do? You order a beer of course! You’ll have two options: “The light p#ssy one, or the real kiwi dark beer that men drink”. You choose, mate. That stuff goes down real good, no joke. Now it’s time to decide what person you want to be: you can sit in one of the many tables and enjoy your beer, or start talking with whoever else is at the bar with you. Not only will you meet real locals, but you’ll meet real people. Don’t expect fake compliments, or fake smiles. Expect, instead, real conversations, real deep connections that only few places can still give you on this planet, without the feeling of being just another customer. In here, You are a person. Stay at the bar, play some pool, have another couple of beers. This moment will last forever, and will bring out memories and feelings that had for too long been forgotten. When you had enough, go to sleep. You’ll wake up tomorrow with one of the best view you could ever imagine, surrounded by hills, cows and the same Tavern, that now seems sleeping, waiting for another night, another tired traveller. If any of this rang a bell in you, in your soul, then this is The place. You know what I’m talking about. Or you are curious enough to come and see. If none of this had any effect on you, I won’t lie to you: maybe you should go somewhere else. Or, maybe, you should challenge your inner self, and step your first foot in. The Tavern is not a place for everyone, but everyone should go at The Tavern at least once. With Love, Francesco & ValentinaMore

Stopped for a beer on our way north. Sweet local, friendly owners, will definitely stop again next time we're on our way through. Places like this are slowly disappearing, hope they don't!
