Tropicana is an institution it's customer range from the rich the poor and the in between. Originally it had the grunge look going for it but some years ago it turned into a modern hot spot. However it has always had quality at an affordable price. On a recent visit two of us each had a chicken schnitzel which came... More

The Tropicana has a steady clientele - the locals keep coming back because of the broad variety of food at very reasonable prices - and service is very good. Daily newspapers are available to read whilst enjoying a coffee or having a meal.

Cash only - private ATM at door ($2.70 charge) 1 teabag and small pot of hot water = $3.30 Asked for toilet and was directed to it although no attempt to provide key or access at time of asking. Loathsome place! Definitely not coming back - eftpos facilities would have appeased me somewhat but the dirty toilets are unsatisfactory and... More

We went there based on its apparent popularity (plenty of customers sitting around). First thing to note is its cash only - no eftpos accepted (there is a cash machine at the door). We ordered a couple of coffees and some breakfast (omelettes etc) - $40 for two and pick up your own cutlery, condiments etc on the way to... More

A classic Sydney haunt. Cafe style where you make your order at the counter and advise you location. The ceiling has numbers which assists waitresses locating you. Side orders on toast available with most meals. I always get the large Greek Salad (not really large) and it full of crisp iceberg, tomato cucumber and black olives with a few bits... More

just little things but always something not right: cream instead of sour cream on the salmon carpaccio; the still wet poached eggs on the eggs benedict seeping water into the muffin; the carrot cake is STALE!! And if you don't want white bread you have to pay extra!!

We're locals and used to eat here regularly. the service has become abysimal so we've avoided it for the last few months. Yesterday we thought we'd go back but things have become worse. Tables were ALL dirty and nobody had been around to clean them up despite waitperson standing around staring out the window. The 'trainee' taking orders didn't know... More

This place is what it is - an un pretentious cafe on the edge of the Cross. Poached eggs on Turkish bread with Italian sausage, Braccio d Ferro, an egg, spinach, ham and provolone cheese combo and soft scrambled eggs top the menu for me. Coffee is good and served in a Demi-Tass not a glass, so big tick. Great... More

Great choice of food, most of the time well executed without being pretentious, Great value as plates are full. Only main trouble is the service of the dish as waiters/waitress seem lost when dishes for the same table are not ready at the same time. It required several time to send back the dish to kitchen as it arrives cold... More

If you like REAL coffee with a touch of bitterness and full body THIS is the place. If McDonald's McCafe is your thing forget it, take your bland palette and bugger off. I just found out you can buy the Tropicana blend from the La Casa Del Caffe website too. If you live outside of Sydney, buy bag and pretend... More

Staying in Darlinghurst

Neighbourhood Profile
Darlinghurst
Home of the small bar revolution in Sydney, Darlinghurst has more bars per capita than any other suburb. Themes range from American whiskey bars and 1950’s theme bars to hidden bars requiring secret passwords. Oxford Street is the "Gay Capital" of Australia, where gay and lesbian-friendly venues feature “diva shows” and dancing until the morning. Vintage lovers flock to Crown Street, and small designer boutiques can be found along Victoria and Bourke Streets. Dining in Darlinghurst is a gastronomic adventure. Food from all over the world is on the menu, from American ribs to tapas, sushi to gelato and every ethnicity in between.
