We were looking forward to out dinner at Portello Rosso as a previous experience was excellent. However this time whilst the food was acceptable it was a disappointment and overpriced. The paella for two we ordered was small and lacked the depth of flavours expected. No crispy base and poor quality seafood. The sangria was a bit watery and also... More

Always on the look out for Spanish food, so stumbled on this amazing little Spanish restaurant. 5 out of 5. Brilliant service, amazing Tapas and we enjoyed the mixed seafood and meat paella as main, the flavours were jumping around in our mouths. This is a must for Spanish food lovers. Yummy!!!!!!!

Great little place tucked away in knee of Melbournes fantastic laneways. Busy place with a good atmosphere. Nice menu with a good range of tapas and share plates. Cool cocktail bar on the top level.

We enjoyed the Chef's Selection. Each dish presented was very tasty and authentic. The service from the staff was fabulous. The quantity of food served for the banquet was sufficient. Drinks were a little on the expensive side. Overall a most enjoyable dining experience.

Wow. Amazing food and vibe from this hidden restaurant. The mussels were the highlight - I tried mussels every night for a week in Spain and this sauce was by far the best I'd had. The service was prompt. The only thing not authentic was the sangria which was delicious but didn't taste like a typical Spanish sangria - however... More

This restaurant has a friendly casual feel, it's cosy and you can be seated sharing a large tall table or along a long bench with others.

Took my work team for lunch here on a Friday for Xmas breakup. Absolutely fabulous. Food magnificent, wine list and beers all international and good. Great atmosphere. Loud and full house. Agree that the sangria however is average and overpriced. Well worth a visit.

Portello Rosso is hidden down a laneway like all good Melbournian restaurants are. They serve gigantic bowls of paella to share. The seafood one that my friend and I consumed was delicious. However, it does take 45 minutes to cook. The staff and the menu tell you this. So order a small entree or 2 while you wait. Service was... More

We have several small plates to try also a seafood paella. The paella was under cooked as the rice was still crunchy. It was also very very expensive for what we got. Also $50 for a litre of Sangria is way too much. Food was good, service was good I just can't justify the prices charged for what you get.

We happened upon this place when we were struggling to find a restaurant Friday night. Trip Advisor suggested Portello Rosso and we are so glad it did! In a lane way off Little Burke, it really is a hole in the wall, linked to a fabulous little cocktail bar upstairs. Beautiful, warm and inviting interior, with friendly and efficient staff!... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
