I love this place so much I'm almost tempted not to review it as I don't want it overrun by people. But Purple Peanuts is so good it deserves to grow. Not a place to linger but great for a nutritious and reasonably priced Japanese influenced meal at the Southern Cross end of Collins St. This is a very casual... More

Purple Peanuts is my favourite place around Southern Cross to eat and to recommend to tourists who pass through my work. Not only do they make the best tuna and vegetable onigiri (I hope the spelling is right!) balls but the chicken curry is a favourite of mine! Staff are always friendly and efficient, and who doesn't love a place... More

This is a great little Japanese restaurant. Its more for quick eats but is fresh, reasonably priced and the sushi is yum and the curry is good.

Had a spectacular lunch here at the Purple Peanuts. To be honest, everything is to die for here and the prices are very competitive. They mix the old school Japanese cuisine with a bit of fusion thrown in. A bit hard to find a place to sit in the typically cramped surroundings of a Japanese restaurant but they also have... More

In a very good part of Melbourne close to a wide variety of food shops and the Train Station across the road.

This small cafe has a great range of takeaway sushi and other item, plus hot items. I has the Yasai Curry Soba a (delicious vege noodle curry), while my partner had the Kakuni Pork ( which was tasty but a bit tough). Service was fast and friendly and I loved the fact that each meal came with the option of... More

Come eat here if you're looking for something close to Southern Cross Station that's delicious every time. So glad we gave this place a chance and didnt give in to the commercial eateries in the same vacinity. I had the Kakunui Pork and my friend had the Curry Chicken. Absolutely devine.

I was in Australia and NZ for 3 weeks as part of a conference and vacation and I can honestly say that the lunch I had a Purple Peanuts was the best meal of my trip. We unexpectedly ended up in this area after looking for a store and I used yelp and saw place. Most of the reviews are... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
