We "fell" on this restaurant and were not at all prepared, as we were still dressed in our jeans and sneakers from a day of touring. We should have known at the entrance to this restaurant that we were not appropriately dressed, but nevertheless, we were taken upstairs in the elevator and seated. The restaurant is beautiful, and there were... More

My partner and I were visiting Melbourne and we decided to check out Flower Drum basically because it has two chef hats and has won multiple AGFG awards since the first edition back in 1980. Had to overcome a lot of negativity from people telling us it was just Chinese food at the end of the day or that you... More

Cantonese food is not my favourite Chinese cuisine, but Flower Drum delivers far more. The food is exquisite and fine and so beautifully presented and delivered. What makes it stand out is the service. Our waiter, Wen, was perfect - anticipating every need. And talk about tea! There is no other Chinese restaurant in memory that delivers so much delicious... I have wanted to go to the Flower Drum for ever, since my late uncle said it was the best Chinese restaurant in Australia, but that was many ,many years ago. When we arrived, I was taken aback at how the decor was so yesterday and the menu was so 'suburbia'. However basic food done really really well is very... More

Not a fan of Asian food but the others in or party were. General opinion was that the prices were way over the top and the food did not measure up to the prices charged. Presentation was average although wait staff were very attentive and helpful. Won't go back.

Whenever my husband and I are in Melbourne we book the Flower Drum. Old school service and beautifully executed food this Melbourne restaurant focussing on Cantonese dishes is worth the expensive prices. This is a romantic, mature , adults restaurant.

A great dining experience. From the moment we entered polite and attentive service . Amazing food served with care and professionalism . The menu is impressive whether it is the set banquets or a la carte . A culinary experience , the Singapore noodles are superb , lamb delicious . Will return to sample more delightful Cantonese dishes .

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
