This restaurant is in Chinatown and offers your typical Cantonese food and seafood. The abalone and beef hot pot was good and the cooked dishes were also reasonably good. However, it is your typical Chinese restaurant with rude waiters who only too keen to ignore you.

Just got home from Shark Fin House Restaurant. To start with, we enjoyed the beautiful display aquarium at the entrance. However, after we were seated it was difficult to attain our menus as there was no communication with staff. Once we ordered, service was TOO FAST. Food was given to us too quickly and was taken away just as quickly.... More

Over all the food was good although it was mainly all deep fried. Service was good ut toward the end of our banquet it was slow. The waitress changed our total of bill by addi g another $25 at the stage of paying with no explanation offered.then proceeded to rudely ask for a tip. The toilets are an inconvenience being... We were a table of 2 adults and 4 children and throughly enjoyed the yum Cha selection. We also had drinks and fried rice. Perfect place for groups. Recommend the prawn dumplings. Also recommend booking as very busy. Fast service, And great value. We are a lot and bill was $115 including tip!

For the price of this restaurant, service is seriously lacking! Only certain patrons were given hand towels, we were not. Unfriendly and abrupt service...food quick but Luke warm...for price I'd go somewhere else

For years visiting Melbourne a meal at Chinatown was a highlight but sadly how the mighty has fallen. This place is rather typical of growing poor service. We had the see-food service. Plates would arrive not what we ordered and then would suddenly disappear and reappear on another table despite been prodded by my dinning partner. Now the meal after... More

We were in Melbourne for Chinese New Year, and it got to the point where after seeing and hearing about Chinese New Year, their culture and their food, we simply had to go and get ourselves a Chinese fix. We settled on Shark Fin House as it had good reviews online (thanks TripAdvisor!), and it was great. The food was... More

My husband and I stopped at this restaurant after a show and whilst the food was adequate I was completely turned off because of a tank of dying fish at the entrance. The tank water was appalling and the poor large fish were floating upside down.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
