Typically when I order miso soup in a Japanese restaurant this would be the first course served. However in the case of Shoya, my miso soup did not arrive until after everyone else main course had been served. We had to ask multiple times for the status of our soup before it arrived. Additionally, we ordered the Sushi Sashimi Moriawase... More

Three of us ordered the 5 course business lunch, each selecting a different main and being Singaporeans we of course shared the mains. They were all well presented and cooked to our specifications. Delicious! The starters and dessert were also of a high standard. We fully enjoyed the substantial but not over-powering meal, the service and the ambience. At a... More

We have eaten here many times over several years. Our experience on Sunday 31 October 2016 was certainly less than enjoyable. Poor service, poor organization and over priced

We went to Soya for dinner with friends two of which speak fluent Japanese. The BBQ we ordered had to be reconfirmed several times. They also forgot the wine and made many other mistakes with our food. The waitresses were disinterested and spoke very little English. The food was extremely overpriced. There are do many fabulous Japanese restaurants within the... More

The five course business set lunch menu was a gastronomic delight. The serving sizes were perfect. The chef's imagination and attention to detail was evident in both the presentation and flavours. The sashimi was served in an ice dome - very different! Will become a regular place to take customers, friends and family in the future.

I'm sure the proprietor spend a lot of money on this restaurant BUT have forgotten one FUNDAMENTAL aspect of a TRUE Japanese society ..... its sophisticated CULTURE! Japanese food is a reflection of love for their culture, hence Kaiseki and before any Masterchef aired on TV there's a show called Iron Chef, still the best format. Yes, Shoya food is... More

Try to sit upstairs with the sushi chefs, it's great watching them delicately slice the fish and serve it to you fresh. The sake menu is also good but quite expensive. The degustations are always a good option if you're looking to do a business lunch. Would recommend this restaurant.

Decided to try this place due to its great reviews and ordered the 'Matsu' lunch set. Food was amazing and service was wonderful. Sashimi was very fresh and wagyu beef cooked perfectly. Highly recommend this place it's great value for money!

This is probably my favourite Japanese restaurant in Melbourne. Been here for lunch may times and the choice available with the set menu is just amazing. Had the Matsu set and there are so many courses ranging from sashishi, to fried beef, to fried rice and desert. The fish here is so fresh every time. Very popular during lunch time... More

Have supported this restaurant for many years and spent a few dollars there. Took our close friends there for the first time a few weeks back because the food is so good and we wanted to share the experience with them. Following a pleasant meal, we sat chatting and finishing our drinks after dessert when the maître d' said and... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
