Mostly Japanese customers, sitting at counter and chatting with chef. Non Japanese tend to order cooked food rather than sashimi. The sashimi, although fresh, lacks variety, with only the usual salmon, tuna, hamachi.. The grilled kingfish was good. On a weekend night, best to make reservations as it's packed.

Best sushi i have eaten in Australia. Basic no frills restaurant but food is exceptional. Unfortunately shop is going to shutdown soon. Go before it does.

Simple, basic, unpretentious and very, very Japanese, I thought we were back on Tokyo or Osaka when we stumbled into this place, looking for a quick meal before the theatre. If you're looking for fancy food or fancy surrounds, forget it, but if you like excellent home style Japanese cuisine at a reasonable price, this place is hard to beat.... More

Good place to get consistently basic, but nice bento box from a native Japanese elderly couple. Service is fast and generally very good.

We have been there for a while. It reminds me of the time when I was in Japan drinking. We always order sashimi main ,salmon maki, tuna row maki and karaage!!! Lunch box looks good too!

This is a no-frills down-to-earth small Japanese eatery serves authentic Japanese food at a reasonable price. If you want fancy decor or banquet type of Japanese food, don't come here. But if you just want to simple, home-cooking type of Japanese food, and don't want to get ripped off, then this is the place I'll recommend. We had Tenzaru Soba... More

Whilst visiting a friend he suggested we have dinner at one of his favourite haunts. Sushi Masa has been quietly serving its outstanding fare for a couple of decades yet I had never visited. It is tucked away between louder, brighter neighbors such that you could walk by and not notice it was there. I must have done so dozens... More

I like the prawn and salmon sushi with miso soup at good reasonable price. I dislike the mustard because it has a pungent taste

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
