First of all, it is worth mentioning that this place was almost empty when I've entered and there was only 2 hours till closure. You would assume that you could seat wherever you wish but not here.. If the table is for 4 people you are not allowed to take a seat. I was really asking myself a question -... More

Many of the restaurants near St. Mathias served pizzas or offered cafeteria food. The Black Raven had a more local style and offered Hungarian comfort food . I enjoyed a lunchtime meal of wild board stew, roasted potatoes (seemed to be served with everything) and a nice glass of house wine. It was very reasonably priced and they had no... More

Prices are displayed at the entrance, so you know what you are going to pay. What you don't know is how tasteless can be even a relatively fatty dish. Onion soup is hot water with onion flavor and a big squared bread slice with fused cheese, turkey breast is filled not with chestnuts, but with chestnut jam, so sweet that... More

Although we knew this restaurant wasn't going to be one of the best in Budapest, we decided to go mainly because it was close to the hotel. The food is best described as comfort food, one that a Hungarian family can easily prepare at home. The interior has quite some character and dinner time entertainment is provided by a 3-man... I visited this place last week with my family and friends. We tasted a lot of dishes and no one was tasteful! The worst goulash I ever ate at someplace. Each side dish was not included in price of dish itself. Over priced!!! Musicians playing inside asked for beer.I bought to them one round but their request was not pleasant for... More

Dear Guest, We are sorry that our meals could not fit to your taste. About the side dish, there it is on the menucard that the sides are not included in the meal, and it is because there are people who only would like to have the meal itself, or does not like the side dish wich is traditionelly fits... Impossible to visit Budapest without visiting Buda castle and to crown that, in summer, with a pleasant lunch on a sunny terrace. Just beyond the toursit traps or nearly so you may find the Black Raven. I tried a traditional beef goulash there - on a visit of only half a day I wanted to taste the national dish. The... More

Dear Guest, Thank you for your kind words. Each are a compliment for us all. There are two wines, that you can have by the glass in our restaurant, but from these two you might have the Cabernet Savignon of Mayer winery. All the best, Team Black Raven More

We found the food to be good and the wine delicious. The waiter was very efficient and friendly. The prices were a little higher than in other restaurants we had eaten in but then this place is in a very touristy area. My granddaughter enjoyed the violinist in the 3 men band (she is learning to play the fiddle).

apart from the relatively atmospheric environment, the food wasn't even mediocre. one of the worst goulash plates with beef pieces full of fat, rice that was sticky and microwave heated and hungarian style steaks that were tasteless. there was a live band who tried to sell their cd. Too expensive for no reason.

We were in the Holy Trinity Square area on a cold windy day and decided to take time for a nice sit-down lunch. We found this "Black Raven Restaurant" and were warmly greeted. The menu and atmosphere were quite authentic. We were pleased with our lunch choices. The live music and good Hungarian wine made for a complete experience.

The food was faultless. Smoked trout and salad, so fresh. Beef Budapest style was amazing, especially as I love offal which was in the stew accompany this. Then very greedily had a platter of hungarian cheeses. Added to this was a string trio who played some wonderful hungarian music, and some themes from the movies. The rest of the family... More

Staying in District I / Buda

Neighbourhood Profile
District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.
