We have visited that restaurant in February again. We are always overwhelmed by the location, the room, the staff, ist kindness and skills. (We would like to underline specially a female waiter, Ms Mee. She is lovely and takes care very well of her guests.) When one is visiting Vientiane it is a must to go there. The restaurant is set in a beautiful old French house. The staff are attentive and the food excellent. We chose the taster selection of nine dishes which was attractively presented and delicious. The Laos music was peaceful and unintrusive and the Laos traditional dancing was a joy.

We brought our visitors here for some authentic Lao food. The music and dancing was really an embellishment to our meal and the food was also very good! The restaurant is an old house from the colonial era and is quite stately and beautiful. Overall, we had a great time- this is the place to bring your guests who want... More

My second visit and is a must when visiting Vientiane. The restaurant is set in a nice colonial residence, service is warm and very attentive, English levels very good Food is outstanding, flavors are somewhat mild and perhaps toned down for foreigners but you do see many locals here. Pricing is quite reasonable and portions are generous. Well worth it

I think Kualao is the one of the best fine dining in Vientiane. Restaurant building, food, table setting and staff are outstanding. It also provide live classical music and dance show.

Nice restaurant in an old, French colonial building. We were there for lunch, so we didn’t see the dance performance. The food was very nice, and the service was exemplary, which in my mind made up for it being slightly dusty in spots. We were told that the menu was authentic Lao cuisine, from the benign to the exotic; so... More

Vientiane is far from as charming as Luang Prabang but Kualao offers a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the city in a refined old French Colonial building. We recently (February, 2017) enjoyed a very nice lunch here. We started out with a very spicy Hot and Sour Soup as well as Mekong Riverweed Crisps. We continued on... More

The restaurant is definitely up market with professionally dressed waitresses and waiters. Service is good and it has traditional music and dance starting at 7.30. But compared to the Local food we tried at the little local places/markets.. this food doesn't stand a chance.. And the food is quite pricey and what you would expect at a more upmarket restaurant.... More

I was a bit nervous that this would be a tourist trap, but have to say that it was a genuine treat! The food and service were excellent and the music and dance performance was most enjoyable. By all means, give it a try!

Description
Kualao is not just a paragon of Vientiane hospitality, but is also a charming example of French colonial architecture and a treasury of the finest, authentic Lao cuisine.

---------

Kualao Restaurant is Vientiane's most popular, internationally recognized, up-scale and authentic Lao food restaurant, where both local and visiting diners bask in an ambience that flawlessly reincarnates the romantic and sophisticated atmosphere of early colonial French Indochina.

Kualao is discretely, and conveniently, nestled on the corner of the city's landmark That Dam Intersection, which is known for the famous 'Black Shrine' stupa that sits at the center of the nearby roundabout.

The restaurant is housed in a charmingly elegant, vintage villa that, until only decades ago, formed the residential estate of French colonial officials. The restaurant's exterior epitomizes architecture 'a la francaise', invoking thoughts of the society parties, business deals and political intrigue that must have taken place there in the colonial era. The interior, however, whispers the soft Lao overtones of a traditional Southeast Asian interior. The distinctively patterned textiles, the rattan wall rendering, the discrete lighting, the traditionally glazed ceramic plates and the elegant golden cutlery is distinctly Lao and has been fused with modern, international essentials, such as a fully stocked wine cellar and an English language version of the menu.

The harmonious blend of East and West is typified by the beautiful female hostesses in their traditional, multi-colored Lao Sinh skirts and the male 'garcons' in their formal, western-style black trousers, white shirts and bow ties.

In its days as a prominent colonial estate, the Kualao building played host to Vientiane's elite society. Now, as Vientiane's most prestigious Lao restaurant, it is still the perfect place to meet, relax, enjoy sumptuous food and impeccable service and be captivated by enchanting Lao entertainment.

You cannot truly say you have experienced the best that Laos has to offer unless you have dined at Kualao.
