Our group of 8 was taken to this restaurant for lunch while In Vientiane, we were expecting a better experience after his (tour guide) glowing reports but were sadly disappointed. After being escorted to our table, we were given 5 menus for 8 people then asked to order before people had a chance to review the menu. Next beer arrived,... More

Dear touringduoSydney, Sorry to hear that the experience was below your expectations. We are at least happy to know that the food was tasty! The beer should never have been served "hot," of course. At the very least, it should have been submerged in an ice bucket. It is true that sometimes cold beer does run out because of sudden... More

We had lunch at this restaurant with a group of 24 people, wait staff were very efficient at ensuring our group had been provided drinks before serving a number of courses of excellent food. Each meal was served with a smile and great courtesy. I thought this restaurant was very organised, friendly and provided great food. Highly recommended.

The kualao restaurant is located in a renovated house in central Vientiane, close to the Presidential palace. Yes, it caters to tour groups, but it also attracts locals - so the food is genuine Lao. We liked the look of the place and asked for a dinner reservation in the afternoon. We arrived at 7 pm to be shown to... More

Dear Tony E, Thanks for your kind words. Yes, we cater to both locals and tourists. Our cultural show appeals to both groups. It's pricy, but hopefully worth it! Please do let us know if there was anything that you would like to see improved. Cheers, Kualao Management More

We don't usually go to "cultural shows" but decided that this restaurant looked interesting enough to try. The food was relatively good - chicken curry was excellent but the Lao pork stew (supposedly stewed all day) was disappointing (the pig must have been awfully old - the meat very tough and chewy but the sauce and vegetables were good). We... More

Dear Judy L, I am a personal fan of the mesmerizing hand gestures of the dancers as well. I agree that the chicken curry is fabulous. And yes, we'll talk to the musicians about their smiling! The Lao pork stew issue - we would like to clarify that only the bones and vegetables have been stewed all day. Freshly sliced... More

My title says it all. They serve really good black sticky rice. It's rather pricey by Laotian standard. This seems to be a hangout place for government officials in Laos. There was a musical performance which was really intriguing for a curious tourist like myself.

Dear Walao, We highly value your opinion and are exceptionally pleased that you enjoyed the food and ambiance of the restaurant. Yes, the dark sticky rice is quite pleasant and in our book, price is an indication of quality. We hope to see you again the next time you are at our humble restaurant. This is your typical tourist oriented restaurant. However, if you're only here for a night or two then it's worth a try because you get a reasonably authentic traditional dance perfomance and if you choose the mixed platter then you get a great taste of most of the better known Lao cuisine.

Dear James W, We're glad that you had a decent time at the restaurant. If you have any suggestions on how we can make it less "touristy," please do let us know. We say this because it may surprise you that well over half of our customers are locals (Lao people). Thank you for taking the time to leave comments.... More

Maybe the most well known restaurant in Laos. It is mostly directed for tourist, but also some locals enjoy it. Menu has plenty of local delights, but perhaps those meals are not very spicy. In the evening they have traditional Lao show with band and dancer.

Dear BarangPP, We are pleased that you left some nice comments. Thank you very much. Kualao is not just a paragon of Vientiane hospitality, but is also a charming example of French colonial architecture and a treasury of the finest, authentic Lao cuisine.

Kualao Restaurant is Vientiane's most popular, internationally recognized, up-scale and authentic Lao food restaurant, where both local and visiting diners bask in an ambience that flawlessly reincarnates the romantic and sophisticated atmosphere of early colonial French Indochina.

Kualao is discretely, and conveniently, nestled on the corner of the city's landmark That Dam Intersection, which is known for the famous 'Black Shrine' stupa that sits at the center of the nearby roundabout.

The restaurant is housed in a charmingly elegant, vintage villa that, until only decades ago, formed the residential estate of French colonial officials. The restaurant's exterior epitomizes architecture 'a la francaise', invoking thoughts of the society parties, business deals and political intrigue that must have taken place there in the colonial era. The interior, however, whispers the soft Lao overtones of a traditional Southeast Asian interior. The distinctively patterned textiles, the rattan wall rendering, the discrete lighting, the traditionally glazed ceramic plates and the elegant golden cutlery is distinctly Lao and has been fused with modern, international essentials, such as a fully stocked wine cellar and an English language version of the menu.

The harmonious blend of East and West is typified by the beautiful female hostesses in their traditional, multi-colored Lao Sinh skirts and the male 'garcons' in their formal, western-style black trousers, white shirts and bow ties.

In its days as a prominent colonial estate, the Kualao building played host to Vientiane's elite society. Now, as Vientiane's most prestigious Lao restaurant, it is still the perfect place to meet, relax, enjoy sumptuous food and impeccable service and be captivated by enchanting Lao entertainment.

You cannot truly say you have experienced the best that Laos has to offer unless you have dined at Kualao.
