Cant say that I would have gone to the end of that alley to look for a restaurant but under the recommendations of our trusted B&B host we did and did not regret it at all, The place offers "The Original Chorrillana" and contrary to other reviews it is only filled with locals as there were no other tourists around... Both my girlfriend and my travel book were mentioning J Cruz as the must try restaurant in Valparaiso. We ordered the Chorrillana meal for 2. What a disappointment. Go for it if you like to eat a meal without any taste and caoutchouc beef. I strongly recommend you to keep the 10000 chilean pesos it will cost you, go to... More

We went to Casino Social J Cruz based on a Lonely Planet recommendation for it being the origin of Chile's legendary dish chorrillana (mountain of fries topped with onions, meat and eggs). Quantities are fine, one chorrillana is big enough for 2-3 people, but we found the dish not well prepared. Fries were not crispy, onions and meat were soft... More

We went here because it was recommended by a guide book. When we got to the end of the alley and stood before the graffiti covered door we had our doubts. We stepped through into this small, lively place where the walls are covered with photographs of people and kitsch. Of course we had the chorrillana as it was invented... More

Really cool place, with great atmosphere and best chorrillana I tried in Chile. Also the place itself is one of the most unique restaurant I've ever been to.

The atmosphere is great, you can really feel what Valparaiso and its history are like. You can enjoy a great typical chorrillana (chips with egg and meat) and beer.

You have got to Want To Find It.. . .. .. Tucked at the end of an alley. Proud of their one item menu (they invente charrulliada). But now others keep their fries crispier and their fried egg more obvious. It appears that this would be a terrific spot for post adolescent boozing (Husong's Cantina, Dave & Buster's, Harzd Rock... This place was fantastic, not sure what everybody is complaining, not greasy, but there is moisture from the onions on the plate. Great place for lunch

We visited J.Cruz for the famous "chorillana" dish, a meat and potatoes plate. The restaurant is filled with old photos, graffiti, wine bottles, even a bomb hangs from the ceiling!!It resembles more like a museum than a restaurant. The chorillana itself didn't impress us that much..a bunch of beef mixed with soft fried potatoes..service was good,'tho and we left our signatures among the... More

Rough Guide pointed us here but we wished it hadn't . Bullying style of customer service, greasy specialty of chips with steak and egg. Two tier system of who got the better bread rolls with meal apparently - not us. Inexpensive but sits like a stone in your stomach. Wouldn't bother personally.
