I showed them my gf card and explained them my requirements. Their English was good enough to communicate and make myself clear. They also went in the kitchen to double-check something and then told me some options on the menu I could eat. The food...was delicious and service was great. I felt safe to eat there as a celiac/ coeliac. I also enjoy supporting good causes like this cooking school for the local kids.More

Khaiphaen is a "training" restaurant, a non-profit I guess, but it features serious Lao food, an attractive atmosphere in the old town, and studiously good service. The green beans with lime were a revelation. Seriously. Another organization worthy of support.

The best meal we had during our time in Luang Prabang. Excellent service and top quality food. I also love the fact that the restaurant trains local youths in cooking and serving, a very worthwhile cause :) I highly recommend this restaurant

Support this worthwhile project. Marginalized youth are trained in cooking and serving skills at Khaiphaen. We had dinner here 3 times during our stay in Luang Prabang. Great service and delicious food. We had the duck special, chicken with celery, fish dumplings, laksa and pork...belly. Favourite drink - red tea with lime and mint. Favourite dessert - coconut pandan pannacotta.More

If this isn't, I'd be pretty surprised. I certainly haven't found anything else approaching this level. There may be better, but not in this price bracket. Exotic Lao food with a touch of creativity, and all for a good cause too - supporting marginalized young...people. I'm really demanding, and LP is a great place to eat - but I'm still going back tomorrow :-)More

Don't miss the tofu and khaiphaen salad. The namesake khaiphaen is a river weed that the restaurant deep fries and serves with home made silken tofu in a fruit sauce. As other diners have said, the pork belly is also amazing. We ate dinner here...twice just to eat those 2 dishes again! Khaiphaen runs a vocational and cooking school teaching restaurant service as well as cooking, so some of the servers are actually students but they are all uniformly courteous and lovely staff.More

We stopped here for our final of 4 evening meals in Luang Prabang. Food was mostly tasty, well presented and a similar price to the other restaurants we tried. We liked that they appear to be doing very good ethical work locally too. The eggplant...dip was great, the Laska well flavoured if a bit short on fish and spice! A slight disappointment was the desert which was too sweet for my taste though strawberry sauce was great.More

Came here for dinner early at around 4pm, before the dinner crowd arrived. Have to say that the service staff here are very attentive and I felt welcome despite been alone. Ordered the January special Grilled Duck Laap and one of the popular item -...Crispy Five Spice Pork Belly, frequently been mentioned in the reviews here. The Grilled Duck Laap is something unique in the taste with very spicy chilli. But it goes very well with the plain rice. The Crispy Pork Belly is something I really love. I am Asian Chinese and roast pork belly is a very common item in cantonese cuisine. But I usually skip it as pork belly are usually full of fats and grease. But the pork belly here is really good without all the overloaded fats!! And the somehow special pumpkin and hibicus honey condiments at the side really goes well with it. A satisfying indulgence meal.More

Creative Local cuisine. This restaurant is a training restaurant for marginalized youth. You would never know it, because the dishes that are served are excellent. They must have a very good supervisor.
