We ordered the walleye dinner. The walleye was panko encrusted and then deep fried. Unfortunately the breading was too heavy and then overcooked. However, when the breading was removed the fish was edible. I should have thought to ask it they could pan fry or bake it but alas I didn't. The fingerling potatoes and asparagus were very good. My husband liked the garlic bread but I did not. It reminded me of Texas toast and tasted like it had been dipped in butter and garlic powder. Others in our party ordered the halibut and salmon. Both those entrees looked well-cooked. We may try this restaurant again but I'll stay away from anything breaded and deep fried.

We almost missed this place as we were driving because we were expecting something…different. The reviews were so good that we didn’t expect the dated, dark building. (A bit of 1970s Good Fellas vibe.) That said, inside there were many little nooks and crannies to seat people so it felt nice and private. We ordered the chicken Marsala and lasagna. The Marsala was amazing, my husband said the lasagna was “not bad.” The server was very friendly and attentive. If the aesthetic matched the food, this place would be a 5 easily!

We were visiting a friend in Alpena and he suggested this restaurant. The atmosphere was great, a really nice place with a cozy atmosphere. I ordered a dish with Risotto with Shrimp. They said the Risotto was stuffed with Lobster and I figured you would not really know it but I was wrong. There were actual chunks of Lobster meat in it and the Shrimp were prepared perfectly. One of the better dishes I have had anywhere! My wife ordered a chicken parmesan dish which was also excellent. Excellent restaurant with great service and great ambiance and outstanding food.

We had visited the Courtyard prior to Covid and we gave them a five star review. However on our return trip we did not have a very good experience. First, we visited during a weekday evening when there very few customers in the restaurant. Second, many menu items were listed at "market price"--including steaks. Third, they were out of some salad dressings. Fourth it was over thirty minutes from when we placed our order until the meal was served. Fifth when the meal arrived my NY Strip Steak was way over cooked and my wife's salmon was cold and tough. The waitress never offered to refill our waters. Overall we experienced bad food and poor service.

It’s disheartening to write this review after visiting our local restaurant. (4 people, 4 dissatisfied customers). We eat out all the time, we know good service and food, I find it important to share our experience. 1. We were served a basket of thick bread with a layer of, disgusting, butter on it. (The bread with nicely melted butter use to be a favorite). At this point we had no silverware, napkins or a plate to put it on. 2. The Walleye was served cold with a VERY thick layer of seasoning. There was no way to call this acceptable. 3. A Michigan salad with chicken on the side was cold and seasoned heavily. 4. The Lasagna was ok but definitely not up to the standards in the past. (Had to come home and take a Prilosec) Based on this experience I’m sure we will not be going back. John & Joanne Cooper

I would love to give this a better review-our drinks, my salad and my husband’s soup were great as was the bread. Then came the wait for our entrees. It was at least 45 minutes (we didn’t officially time it) between courses. My husband ordered lasagna and I ordered chicken parmesan. With my first forkful, I realized it was burnt. The chicken was done nicely inside but apparently was left in the fryer far to long. For me, it was inedible. Normally a server will check after a few minutes to see if everything was OK, but we didn’t see her for a while. My husband continued to eat his lasagna (which he liked) while I had a second piece of bread. Finally we saw our server behind the bar. We asked a server at an adjacent table to tell her we would like to have her come over to our table. She did and apologized for the food. She asked what I would like instead. At that point, I just wanted something quick so she suggested pasta with sauce so that is what I ordered thinking it would only take a few minutes. She came back to the table about 5 minutes later to tell me the pasta would take 15 minutes and asked if I wanted to wait for it. I was pretty disgusted by that point as my replacement meal should have been a priority for the kitchen. I declined any further food. We asked for and paid our check (the server had removed my meal from the bill). Based on the service, I cannot rate this restaurant any higher. And on another note, the interior of this restaurant is extremely dark-both in lighting and decor. Hard to read the menu until our eyes adjusted! Very dated and worn as well.

Over priced. Small menu. Listed as Italian American restaurant but only a couple Italian items, mostly seafood options. 3 people cost 100.00 and all we got was 2 chicken dinners, small individual pepperoni pizza, 1 appetizer and 3 drinks. None of us ate more then a few bites of our meals, but the garlic bread they give with a meal was absolutely delicious and the bruschetta appetizer was good. I would not reccomend this as a top option for a family meal.

Clam chowder was Luke warm and the oyster crackers were stale. Twice baked potato was just not flavorful. The prime rib was cooked well but with no seasoning on the table. I was offered Parmesan and pepper but it needed a touch of salt. The house salad was also uninspired. I also ordered the shrimp for an appetizer. They were over cooked and chewy. Our server was on top of everything and very responsive. The “room” we were placed in for dinner “The pasta shop” had the feel of a broom closet with the extra high chairs stored in it.

The food was great. I was visiting from out of state and wanted to try the walleye. The panko crusted filet was done perfectly and I substituted asparagus for the potatoes, it was good to. The goat cheese green salad with cranberries was also very good. Service was great and I’ll return.

We found this gem of a restaurant 2 years ago when we visited Alpena for our anniversary. When our anniversary rolled around again this year we couldn't think of a better place then this to spend it for dinner. Thankfully, they were allowed to open 4 days before we arrived. The Prime Rib is the absolute best my husband has had. We had the seared shrimp for an appetizer. Just enough spicy to have wonderful flavor and not just hot to be hot. The lasagna I had was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. I have been to some of the nicest restaurants while traveling for work even New York City restaurants and the flavor of this food is outstanding even in comparison. The cocktails were made well and tasted good. The service was very good. They treat you like friends from the moment you walk in. At the current time they don't take reservations but we only waited 10 minutes at the bar and then we had a table. They only had us wait a few minutes so the kitchen could catch up a bit, they were out of practice after having to be closed for indoor dining for so long. Even with that said, we didn't wait long for food. All around wonderful experience. This would be our go to spot if we didn't live over 100 miles away. Oh, I almost forgot dessert was excellent too, chocolate cake! Great value for the money very reasonably priced at least for us. Not sure about the local area comparisons though.

This place was nothing short of amazing!!! Everything we had was fantastic. At first the atmosphere was a bit dark but once my eyes adjusted, I was able to drink it all in. The ambiance was quaint. Seems like it’s been there for a long time. The food was delicious. I had the chicken parmigiana and it breading was light and crisp. The sauce was very flavorful - definitely not from a can. Quite the hidden gem in Northern Michigan that I will be happy to return to!

We had dinner January 16 for my daughter‘s birthday. It had been several years since we’ve been to the courtyard do too it was a little high priced at the time. We received a gift certificate so we gave it another try and we were very pleasantly surprised. The service was wonderful, The setting was just delightful as they set us in a small private room. My wife and daughter each had a drink we all three ordered entrées and the bill was a lot less than I was expecting. The chicken Gorgonzola was really out of this world. It’s an upscale restaurant and is definitely worth dining here. The owners Chris and Laura are top notch people and believe in our community. Good luck bon appétit.

First time dining at this restaurant. Everything about it was a pleasant experience. Exceeded our expectations on many levels. The only negative is that we weren’t sure which door was the front door. Once inside, we were promptly greeted and seated. Our server was friendly, pleasant and prompt. We ordered muscles, goat cheese and cranberry salad and pecan crusted halibut. All perfectly cooked, seasoned and absolutely delicious. There was also thick sliced garlic bread served with our dinner. Highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions. It is a little pricey but the food is sooo worth it!

We spend a week in Alpena every summer. We always make a point to have dinner one evening at The Courtyard. The scallop risotto has been my absolute favorite for years. The scallops are cooked perfectly and the risotto is so creamy. This visit completely proved it again. We recently traveled to downtown Chicago and had dinner at high end restaurant. I tried their scallop risotto, but it came no where near The Courtyard’s version.
