From the moment you walk through the sliding doors into the intimate space of Tribute, you’re transported back in time. Tastefully reminiscent of the 70s and 80s, you’ll find yourself amid Instagram-worthy surrounds. You’ll probably be greeted warmly by chef-owner Sonny, who’ll introduce you to...what’s on the current menu. His is an achingly beautiful story of filial piety that led to the opening of the cafe to share the exquisite flavours of his mom’s Peranakan (nonya) cuisine. No details are spared in recreating the authentic taste served up in nostalgic tiffin boxes. We ordered the nonya fried rice set, chicken rendang set, and yam rice set. It’s hard to pick a favourite as each dish was like a home-cooked meal made with love where only the finest and freshest ingredients are used. For a refreshing drink, order the Tribute’s Special which is an iced tea with just the right amount of nutmeg and mint to make you want to come back for more. (And we did!) If you’re looking for a spot that’s true to the spirit of Penang, where time stands still and you learn to slow down and enjoy the little surprises that await you at every corner, you won’t want to miss this place. Quality food cooked from the heart!

Highly recommended! If you are looking for a place, where things are fresh from the market, changing menu with 2 quality options instead of 20 and a owner, who is putting his passion into his place, you are right to come here! This is what...I want a restaurant to be!More

Awesome little secret spot!

Stumbled into Tribute after a super hot day schelpping around the city. What a cute find! Sonny the owner whipped up a delicious pork bun, fried rice, chicken wings, and a delicious cold juice. I cleaned every plate, the food was so delicious! His place...is super unique and is a real tribute to his mother's cooking and style of decor. It was heartwarming to see how he created a spot to truly honor his mother's style. He also shared so many local travel trips for me to consider as I travel Penang for the first time. Great 80s music, chill vibe, friendly and prompt service. Good little alternative to street stall madness, that's for sure. If you see this place along your way, def stop in! Authentic and so great!More

Best Of The Best Nyonya Food!

We had first discovered this small retro cafe a year ago while looking for authentic Nyonya food in Penang. Since then we keep coming back for more when visiting Penang! Always looking forward for the different dishes on the menu as their weekend tiffin set...changes weekly. We tried a new menu recently. "Salted Fish, Prawn and Vegetables Curry" tiffin set. The flavour is well balanced and tasted so delicious! It is served with Onion Omelette. Definitely a must try if it's on the menu. We had tried this Nyonya Curry in other cafes and restaurants but we find this is one of the best to our liking. We practically finished every single drop of the curry in the tiffin! We also ordered their refreshing signature drink "Tribute Special". Highly recommended for good authentic Penang Nyonya food and cozy modern retro ambience.More

Delicious hidden Nyonya food.

A hidden cafe that next to Hin Bus Depot (Hin Pop-up Sunday Market). Delicious (very delicious) authentic Nyonya light food with cozy, chill and relax environment. They serve in set and don't worry about the choice of set. Cos the owner can cook very well.

The sesame ginger chicken comes out easily from the bones and sauce was tasty and eaten with white rice. Snacks Tiffin consisted of the Kerabu Ikan Bilis, Pork Bun and the Red Bean Soup. The pork bun was yummy. Red bean, good not too sweet....I more or less tried Kerabu Ikan bills for the first time, not bad.Bok-Ni Kerabu. I would recommend all.More

Wonderful food! excellent host!

Had some lunch here: the food was very tasty. Also the interior was great, bringing back many nice memories. Sonny is an excellent host. Also a very touching story that the cafe is named after the tribute to this mom who learned him to cook....She probably was very proud of her son! Very recommendable to visit for food!More

Authentic made from scratch nyonya food

Dining at Retro is a must while in Penang. Had a flavoursome rendang pork, accompanied by refreshing acar with just the right mix of sweet and sour, on fluffy rice, served in a tiffin. Never failed to satisfy my hungry tummy on every visit. Prepare...to be pleasantly surprised by their authentic, made from scratch nyonya dishes.More
