Its a top class fine dining experience for us. Food was top of the world where we can experience different kind of taste throughout the session. Had accompanied with a bottle of wine. I would say there are anytime the top 3 fine dining restaurant in Penang. Car park could be a challenge as there are limited spaces and will need to park outside. Do also book in advance as there are only very limited seats , however you get very attentive and focus waiter/waitresses at all times. Great food.

We had been very lucky to get a table on such a short notice because normally you have to make reservation 2 months in advance which we didn't know. We had called and they had a table for 2 at the bar so we gladly accepted and where asked to come early which we didn't mind. So when we arrived we were given a menu it was still the Chinese New Year's menu but looked very promising. We first ordered drinks I had a special Negroni and my husband had another quiet special cocktail can't remember the name. So when the cocktails arrived the waiter told me to drink 1/2 of my Negroni then only add the passionfruit and then finish the drink it was like an explosion in your mouth. While sipping our cocktails we were presented with amuse touch which were 2 different for both of us 1 was chicken skin very crispy with a filling and the other was like a tartlet of crispy beetroot with another filling very delicious. The following dish was a taco with all different preparations of cauliflower very unique and taste was wonderful. The following dish was a live Boston lobster wonton, lobster emulsion, shaved Parmigiano. The next course for me as abalone and my husband had the sea urchin both very tasty. We then received a palate cleaner in the form of cilantro sorbet sitting on a Parmigiano crunch with cream foam something original. In between we were served a tomato soup with a Parmigiano foam just to die for what a taste and flavours. We had ordered with our meal a bottle of white wine since most of our courses where fish or related to fish and my main course was flounder and my husband had the Wagyu Beef served with hand cut fries and jus maison he then took 1 glas of the red house wine to fit his main course we both loved it all. The dessert was made with pear and meringue with a sorbet from which I can't remember the flavour but we had a wonderful meal and had enjoyed the excellent service and the explanation from the chef. If we ever get back to Penang we will come again. Top restaurant to visit

Love the food and wine! It’s a set lunch/dinner with 3 course or 7. The Manager (KC) was very helpful and informative about the food. Staffs are friendly and efficient. We had bar seat area facing the open kitchen and can see how the art culinary being served. Very interesting! Located inside Hin Bus Depot, it’s at the left end of this big area. Reservation required. Very recommended!

Came across this restaurant when I googled top 5 fine dining restaurants in Penang and followed by good reviews, decided to treat myself a good meal to end Year 2020. Good ambiance, good service and of course tasty food served to me. Taste of food elevated to next level by the pairing drinks (options between alcoholic & non-alcoholic) almost dish by dish. Chef spent time with the customers and explaining each dish being served, this ‘privilege’ only offered to customers who sat at bar counter like me! Indeed, I had a very pleasant dinner there and certain will come back when I visit to Penang next.

This restaurant should have at least a Michelin star. Very inventive cuisine... lettuce sorbet, black cheese tuile (with squid ink), thai tom ka flounder, hay smoked duck, fantastic scallops. Service was very good. It is a very small restaurant (4 tables) and it was a bit slow but everything is cooked a la minute. The wine list could do with a fee burgundy instead of only chablis. Overall highly recommended.

Recommended by a local; this is the type of place we should really only tell our very favourite people about. Tucked away in an old bus depot this place was full of surprises. Friendly, unobtrusive service with just the right amount of commentary offered. One of our group was a foodie/cook and was suitably indulged and impressed. We opted for the 5 course tasting meeting. All dishes were good but the standout was an unadvertised tomato soup served with a Sauvignon blanc foam. Just outstanding. Only disappointment for us was the coffee. Very sour blend. Expensive by Penang standards but excellent value versus HKG or SIN, this really is a place to savour. Let’s hope it doesn’t get too inundated.

My son took me to dinner here during our stay in Penang. In summary, it was an amazing experience. Other diners described it to us as the best 5* restaurant in Penang, & I have to agree with them. Every dish was superb & served beautifully. The homemade bread with curry leaf butter was unusual & delicious. For our mains, my son chose the hay smoked duck which was presented to him in a box. The duck is from Butterworth & looked nice & plump. It was cooked to perfection (I had a taste). I chose the fresh grouper which I enjoyed. We decided on a bottle of champagne which we had throughout all the courses. It was nice to be able to chat to the head chef Kim Hock after our meal. I felt I had to compliment him on his imaginative pairing of certain foods, which without exception, worked beautifully. As they say in France "Sante le Chef". Can't wait for a return visit to this great restaurant.

Incredible food and ambiance. I took my husband there for his 65th birthday while traveling in Asia for 3 months. One of the finest meals we had during the entire trip. The menu was creative and delicious. The chef went out of his way to make it special by accommodating my husband’s allergy to chilis. The wine pairing was perfect. Do not miss the duck which has to be reserved in advance. Thank you to the entire staff for a wonderful experience!

The food here is simply superb! Chef Kim Hock is a rare talent. His food has intricate flavour. Sheer artistry in presentation and provides a culinary journey that is well worth taking. This is an absolute must if you enjoy dining at the finest level. The service was also excellent with each dish carefully explained including the origins of chefs thinking. The restaurant can be a little hard to find – there in lies the challenge. The hay smoked duck is worth ordering in advance. We had forgotten to do so, but were lucky enough that there was a serve available. Menu changes monthly.

we cannot say enough how much we enjoyed our time at this restaurant. from the time we stepped in till the time we stepped out, the service staff were attentive, friendly, courteous and very helpful. our needs were well anticipated. the staff were also very knowledgeable and were able to explain the details of each dish and drink. the degustation menu was excellent and we were pleasantly surprised by how local ingredients and flavours were fused into many of the dishes. the beverage pairing could probably be improved on. that said, we had an awesome time and will highly recommend this to everyone.

Went there for my wife's birthday. Everything was good. Food , service, place. The waitress explained to us for the set meal, one of the items, the duck was not available. Only the fish and the wagyu was available. When the bill came, we were charged 280RM more for the wagyu, on top of the set menu. This additional cost was not mentioned earlier. We felt do ripped off. What a disappointment!

Dear Eugene, Thank you for your review and feedback. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience you may experience. We are very glad that you enjoyed the food, service and ambiance. Unfortunately, the supplementary charges came to you as a surprise at the end of the meal. We totally understand that although the supplementary charges were printed on the menu, we could have done better by highlighting the charges in a different colour. Indeed, our Hay-Aged Duck do require a pre-order of at least 2 days in advance due to the process involving days of aging and drying; hence there is a note explaining on pre-ordering the duck at the time of booking. I am sorry that you have not had a chance to taste our Hay-Aged duck this time round. I am hopeful that we will be able to reserve you a portion of the Hay Age Duck when we are given another opportunity to welcome you back to Restaurant Au Jardin.

Once again sorry for the inconveniences and thank you for visiting us!

As a restaurateur, I tend to be highly critical of the smallest details and, in consequence, I rarely review other restaurants. However I’m delighted to report that Au Jardin, helmed by Owner-Chef Hock, served my wife and I a near-perfect degustation menu when we visited on 22/6/2024. So if you will take my word for it, don’t miss this gem on your visit to Penang! 5 stars for food, service and ambience

I didn't give it a 5 because not everything was perfect. It's a very beautiful and pleasant place with excellent service. However, there is no choice on the menu, it's either imposed on you or you have two choices but of course with an extra charge. The chef uses kaffir lime in all dishes and it's not always well balanced. The portions are so small that in the end, the menu is priced similarly to a Michelin-starred restaurant in France but with lower-quality ingredients. I ordered the pan-fried foie gras as an extra and I was very disappointed, it had no flavor, no sauce, and was served with rice. I would have added some kaffir lime zest or a sorbet. To top it off, we had dessert but at first, I thought it was a pre-dessert because it was so small But no, it was indeed the dessert, just one bite, so it poorly concluded the dinner.

Probably the best fine dining experience I have had in Penang. Every course was artfully curated, carefully explained with lots of interesting and detailed information. I very rarely pay attention unfortunately! Most experience of fine dining looks good superficially but falls flat on taste or might even try too hard with exotic flavours. AuJardin was just right. I can’t even name my favourite course as even the humble palate cleanser was so yummy and exotic. What a cute touch of popping candy. Highly recommend AuJardin for true food connoisseurs.
