Penang is known as a paradise for street food, and it lives up to its reputation. Having enjoyed a great many excellent meals in settings which were informal, to say the least, we had some reticence about retreating to a more formal restaurant. Would it...simply be it be a sanitised and watered-down version of the local cuisine? As it turns out, though, our misgivings were unfounded: Kebaya delivered the best meal of a week-long trip, and one of the best in my experience, ever.
The set menu format allows diners to select two or three courses. While the selections for each course are not exactly extensive, they are clearly differentiated from each other, with several very attractive options for each course.
The menu successfully achieves a contemporary interpretation of traditional regional standards. The wine list offered surprising value for money. The service was superb. The decor complements this historic building, and provides a good setting for a companionable meal.
In short, Kebaya is warmly recommended.More
