We ate here in April 2024. Food was mediocre at best (chicken panush was tasteless, sweet and sour one was ok but nothing to write about). Rice was also not good. I do not understand how this place has such high ratings.

We went to Lepau for lunch and ordered a siakap fish soup, a wrapped purple rice, a daun ubi tepus (vegetable with wild ginger) and a dish of cangkuk with egg. The cangkuk was very fresh and tasty, but the fish was not very fresh...and the rice was all right. The service was friendly and impeccable but also unobtrusive. We spent a week in Batang Ai prior to this meal and so we know something about the wild vegetables the Iban people eat. Our guide was Bidayuh and taught us something about the culture of the natives of Sarawak. We were quite impressed with what they served here in this restaurant. As far as we can tell, the cooking was quite authentic.More

Cold food were served, obviously cooked much earlier in a big pot. Drinking glass smelt eggy. Asked for another glass it was still the same. It's not a place that I would go again.

One of the best meals I had in Malaysia. The food here is local Sarawak food and it is delicious. They have good options for vegetarians and the special juices are a must try. Would recommend it to anyone looking to try local cuisine. One...fyi is that it can be very busy so making a reservation is advisable.More

These folks do traditional Sarawak cuisine very well. We didn’t make a reservation (we recommend that you do) so we felt fortunate to have an excellent last meal in Kuching there. Portions are large so we tried not to order too much. We had Sambal...Beef, Orange Ulu Red Chili Fish, Daun Ubi Goreng (pounded Tapioca Leaves with Tepus) and Purple Bario Rice. We had two delicious drinks to accompany our meal: Jungle Treebark & Pandan Lemongrass. Both the beef and fish dishes were delicious, with lots of layered, rich flavours. The Tapioca Leaves (which were new to us) were tasty, and the tepus (a locally sourced ginger-like plant) added a nice flavour. Be aware; this is a huge order, more suitable for three or four people than for two. The only disappointment of the night was the Purple Bario Rice. It was room temperature, quite dry and pretty bland. We would have been better off just ordering white rice. Of special note: both the drinks were fabulous, bringing really unique flavours to the meal and complementing the food perfectly. Service was friendly, but brisk (there were lots and lots of tables so the servers had to move fast to keep up). The meal was very reasonably priced: RM 74 (CDN $22.50). We can definitely recommend Lepau if youMore

This restaurant was recommended to us for authentic Sarawak cuisine. Can't say how authentic it is, but we had delicious food with lots of vegetarian options - highly recommend the Cangkuk Manis. Reservations recommended but you can get a table as a walk-in; we arrived...just as they opened for dinner and had no problem getting seated.More

I have nothing to complain about regarding this restaurant. The selection of Malaysian and Sarawak traditional cuisine is truly amazing. I’m not sure if they have incorporated any non-Asian flavors, but personally, I think it adds to the overall experience. It’s a must-visit restaurant if...you’re in Kuching.More

Food is a sensitive topic and everyone would have their favorites or even which restaurant is more authentic. Lepau is pretty close according to a couple of locals, including my Bidayuh taxi driver so I would think it's good enough for a visitor like me...to have a true taste of the cuisine. We came for lunch and this place does get crowded and full. You might need to make reservations beforehand. One thing to note if you're coming for lunch is that the place can get pretty warm if it is a hot day out so do dress lightly (decently of course). Highly recommended and do bring a few friends if you want to try more choices!More
