Walking in here is like entering Matcha heaven. We wanted to get a quick grab and go snack and notice at the entrance different Matcha options. The soft serve was already sold out but thankfully we opted to get the Matcha Mochi.

I'd read a lot about Tsujiri before heading to Kyoto and how it was one of the most famous dessert shops in Gion, so I was determined to visit and taste the matcha soft serve it's famous for. Because we went in the evening, it was less crowded and we managed to get a seat upstairs. I had the matcha... More

Me and my wife both likes green tea in any form and my favorite desert is matcha ice cream . At this cafe you can have whatever you want, desert wise, with green tea in it. Service are great, the matcha desserts mixed to perfection and the ice cream the best I have had in my life. Decent prizing and... More

I read the reviews and wanted to try this place, didn't want to queue so went less than 5mins after it opened, and it was still nearly full! Had a nice relaxed and quiet atmosphere though. Really fast service but didn't feel rushed at all. I didn't feel out of place being on my own and I really enjoyed the... More

All 3 locations are equally good. The one in Kyoto Station may be the most accessible for visitors, though the atmosphere of the "honten" or main store and the surrounding neighborhood is a treat in itself. Locals have made pilgrimages here for decades to get the best green tea sweets in Japan. Unless you plan multiple trips here, you really... More

Such an awesome find in the Gion area of Kyoto. After a nice morning at the Kyomizu temple, we decided to have a treat somewhere nearby and found this great spot. One parfait and one shaved ice later, we all agreed this was our favorite spot for a fancy treat thus far. Don't be confused by several other parfait places... More

When in Kyoto visiting these sorta dessert cafes is a must. Tsujiri Honten comes highly recommended. Thankfully there wasn't much of a line when we were there around 4pm. Simple layout with wooden tables & chairs. Brown interior with nice lighting. The ground floor sells tea whereas desserts are served on the 2nd and 3rd floor. Service is friendly &... More

I ate a fair bit of green tea ice cream during my trip to Japan but the ice cream from here was by far my favourite! We had takeaway cones one day and also tried the cafe on the first floor for parfait sundaes another day. Both experiences were good and delicious. It is perhaps a little pricier than some... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
