Come to the beautiful Ippodo tea house in the historic district of Kyoto for an authentic Japanese tea experience. Purchase tea to take home with you from the adjoining shop.

i have bought tea here for some years as presents for Japanese friends. I take the advice of the store about special tea that they may not usually buy themselves, and each time, the recipient has commented on its excellence, also that it brought back memories of tea their mothers and grandmothers used to drink on special occasions.

We had some very good tea here with some traditional desserts. We sat at the bar counter, which was very nice because you get to see how the staff prepare the matcha in front of you. Not all tea places do their tea preparation out in the open like that, so if you have the opportunity, we recommend sitting at... More

we got the set which comes with a tea of your choice and seasonal Japanese sweets. the service staff will guide you on the preparation of your own tea, so that was a cool experience. depending on what you order, tea preparation can be quite elaborate (eg transferring tea over 4 tea cups before letting it steep in the tea... It's a little cafe in the almost legendary tea shop Ippodo. Not many seats so you may have to wait a while. The best part is that English-speaking ladies teaches you, hand in hand, how to make and enjoy tea. 'No hurry', I remember been told, 'wait for the last drop, it's most delicious'. That's like a motto. Go early,... More

I got the weekday special, which let's you have matcha and blancha tea along with a sweet at a discounted price. The ladies there were very accommodating and spoke good English, instructing us on the different types of tea they offer, how to make and drink it and explaining what the wagashi sweet was. It was a nice, relaxing way... More

There are several places to get traditional tea in Kyoto. I have not tried them all, but of all place this is certainly one of the most "design". It seems to go into a Gucci boutique traditional Japanese style or in a jewellery. It is a smooth but precious atmosphere. So it is the tea. Delicious but expensive. If you... More

I became addicted to green tea when I come back. It's a little bitter but there's something make me can not forget. The staff were so helpful and friendly to explain how they made it. Environment is totally perfect. I'll definitely come back.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
