Go there if you are not hungry and have a lot of yens left in your pocket. You'll get lots of rice with a little fish.

I don't know... Looks like only japaneses like it... Very especific food for western paladars, very expensive and the staff works on a "soup nazi" style. There are better (and cheapear) food in Kyoto. Too much rice for me.

Amazing sushi in Kyoto if you really like sushi. No music, no drinks, just great sushi. I have the opportunity to enjoy Hamo Sushi that is only available in July and August, it was spectacular!! This restaurant is a must!!!

It is a recommended place by a couple of foodies websites so it must be good at what it does. For us - used to westernized sushi - it was a difficult dinner: very strong fish flavours (many came with the skin on) on heavy chunks of rice. Not the high-protein dinner we were hoping for. The menu is very... More

This restaurant gets recommended a lot so we decided to check out the traditional Kyoto sushi. Food was excellent and you get your own teapot on the table. Service was horrible. They were cold and unfriendly. The even spoke bad about other guests who just left the restaurant. Being a foreigner they probably thought I don't speak japanese.

This is my first time writing a review for TripAdvisor. If you are considering to experiencing a unique Kyoto style sushi, this is the place to go. Reading the other reviews, I feel like they don't understand Japanese food/taste. The sushi here is made perfectly, and I've been eating the Sabazushi (Mackerel sushi) for over 5 years, and I've never... More

Quite tricky to find. Small, cosy interior but the atmosphere was unfriendly. We ordered sushi which was quite expensive for what it was. It was quite dry so I asked if we could have some soy sauce and the guy said no! So rude. Then when we wanted to pay, all the staff had disappeared and one of the other... More

Found this place after reading many reviews of it from foodie blogs and was not disappointed. The small restaurant was hidden away in a side street of gion and is a must for anyone that is looking for good sushi. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. I highly recommend their mackerel. It was probably the best i had in... More

Service non existent. Food so bland and primitive. Why so expensive? Wow what a bad experience. Worst food ever

Decided to try this restaurant after rave reviews from several blogs about the authenticity of its Kyoto-style sushi. Beautiful little place to look at. No music so it seemed intimidating because there was no one there but us. We found the service rather snobby and cold, and we were told that we had to order a set each as opposed... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
