We went there when looking for a place to have dinner in Gion and can't say we're happy about it. The service was friendly and the atmosphere quite OK, however, the food was not. We both ordered the dinner special expecting it's the recommended dish for the day. Well, it's not. It was a weird mix of all their possible... More

It was recommended for the roof-top view of sunset; other reviews saying American food and service might be the bright spot but TOO touristy and in need up updating. Only part of roof has the western view as most of the other roof area is blocked by brick wall. Mediocre/okay food. Service geared to processing the tourist. Disappointing and wish... More

We went to the beer garden of restaurant kikusui and agree with one of the Below reviews: please please don't go there. The only thing that is good is the view, especially the food is awful.

We unfortunately let our hunger make a bad decision. Nothing like the pictures on the menu. Tasted awful, looked awful, wine was crap. I just hope i dint get good poisoning.

We were desperate for a cold beer on a hot evening in Gion, when we noticed lights on the roof of this building. Ever the adventurers, we jumped into the lift and found ourselves in this rooftop bar overlooking the river, downing steins of cold beer, and munching on gyozas. A fun pit stop, but there's much better food across... More

I was on my way to Gion when I passed this restaurant and said, "I'm hungry for Western food so why not?" It turned out it was EXACTLY what I was hoping for. The menu offered a good variety and the hamburger I ordered was great. The staff was quite courteous and their service was quick. I am looking forward... More

Had a company meal here with a set menu and and all you can drink nomihoudai package. The food they presented us was a rather strange mix of Japanese and Western style which was not prepared particularly well and did not taste that great either. The space itself was adequate for our needs although rather dated now and the service... More

.....and this place attempts to provide it but doesn't quite deliver ! Very small portions ( roasted chicken ) and the meat was very rubbery ! Excellent service and I guess I'm being a typical ( and fussy Brit ) who should learn to accept 'when in Rome.....'

I found it on my way through Gion Shijo morning. great location, the menu was in Japanese until this old lady came with an English translated menu. The service is good (especially the old lady) food is great though.

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
