We decided to have some European food for a change after a week of Japanese cuisines of various types. On a quiet Sunday night we wandered up to this chain bistro for our supper, located near the Karasuma Subway Station. Welcomed by very friendly staff and seated in the non smoking section. It was not very busy and we had... More

My colleague and I were drawn in by so many people claiming this was authentic French cuisine. Maybe only in name. The atmosphere is charming, but that's about it. We thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant, once we found it! A word to the wise, it is located inside a building called Cocon Karasuma. Once inside, we were in an authentic French brasserie. Salads were delicious, steak frites tasty, and fish was fresh. Service was very friendly, but a little slow.

An excellent casual French bistro, and fairly reasonably priced for Kyoto. It had all the atmosphere of a French restaurant, the staff is friendly and multilingual and the food authentic French, we had the steak frites and we were pleasantly surprised that it was really authentic. After two weeks of sushi it was a nice change.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
