We enjoyed the Korean food at this restaurant. We sat at the bar and watched the action. The owner is very friendly. We enjoyed ourselves. The food was good and inexpensive. I would recommend it for a casual dinner.

My wife & I were walking about looking for a place for an evening meal and came across Yamadaruma by chance. It smelt good (we were ready for red meat). There were no places immediately available but we were tired of walking and hungry so decided to sit outside. The wait was worth it. There is an assortment of platters... More

Sit at the bar and enjoy the two chefs cooking in front of you. There is an English menu however a lot of goodies are missing off it, we learnt by pointing at what other Japanese people were eating and then ordering for ourselves. The chefs are quite funny and have little English. We made do with Google Translate lol.... More

Amazing place. Give it a go. They have an English menu but there is a lot that is not on it. Also let the chef decide which sake for you to drink. That is an experience in itself. The two chefs behind the bar area are just amazing to watch. They are meticulous & entertaining to watch and we went... More

A great atmosphere in this small restaurant. Our hosts were very welcoming despite us having no Japanese and them little English - there is an English menu that has on it the most delicious dishes. We ordered a variety and they were all first rate as was the beer, sake and plum liquor. We had a lot of fun watching... More

A friend of mine living in Kyoto took me there Casual Izakaya, but great choice of local and general Japanese cuisine. All of them, esp. fresh sashimi and some tempura were amazing. Also huge variety of sake to choose from. Good value for money. Kyoto has a lot of choices but a bit difficult to find the right one. When... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
