This place has great service, however, I did not love the food. This doesn't mean that the food is bad, it's just not for me. If you are visiting Japan, I recommend trying everything, even though this might mean stumbling upon things you might not love, like this was for me. The service is great in this place, who knows,... We were recommended to go to this restaurant by a local, and were not disappointed. The staff was polite and friendly, the atmosphere was great, and the food was delicious.

My wife and I were craving soba after walking through Yasaka Shrine and TripAdvisor led us here. It bills itself as a very old restaurant but the building has been renovated. Location is not exactly where TripAdvisor points you to on the main street but tucked 1 street behind. We saw a long Japanese soba menu and salivated, but then... More

We were here to try what Soba taste like. Soba is japanese traditional hand made noodle and it had different texture with noodle in the ramen. We ate it with duck broth and tempura. The taste was great but if you are not familiar with it, maybe you will prefer ramen just like us. Fortunately, the service by one old... More

This is one of the oldest Soba restaurants in Kyoto, and especially famous for their Nishin (kippered herring) Soba. Nishin is neither sweet, nor salty. In one word, it is delicious. Just to eat Nishin Soba, it is worth to visit it. Matuba is located beside Minamiza Theater, and it is very easy to find.

Local soba restaurant with old tradition in Tokyo. Tried hot soba and duck and cool soba with tempura prawns. Very tasty soup, good price, fast attended.

This was recommended by a taxi driver as a good place for the local specialty of nishin soba (herring on soba noodles in broth), which was invented in this restaurant. The dish was great, as was the ujicha green tea and the service was so warm from lovely staff.

We were tired and hungry after a morning of walking and were happy to be able to sit down have a steaming bowl of noodles. Nothing fancy, but it sure hit the spot. The place was full and service was slow, but that meant we could sit for a bit longer before setting back out.

Ate here for dinner with my elderly parents and my brother. Nice Soba set. The restaurant also has a english menu in case you need it. Pricing was reasonable. Expect to pay around 1K yen per person.

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
