The food quality at this restaurant is probably better than many restaurants in India! As a South Indian traveller longing for some familiar food, we went to this restaurant. And we were left gobsmacked! The vadas, dosa, rasam etc that we had ordered were truly delicious. The chef Arogiyasamy was there to meet us we had a great time talking... More

Nice food and kind staff, but beware: Extremely small portions! We ended up ordering two main dishes (chicken Tika Masala and Chicken tandoori) which were literally miniscule, 1 portion of bashmati rice for 600+ yen which was practically half a plate and two Nan (to try to fool our hunger after the meal) . Total cost:3040 yen! Inadmissible in my... More

Came to Thilaga with family. Pretty good south Indian food, with an okay vegetarian selection, but what really stood out was the decor. I ordered a paratha set with a vegetable curry. The waiter nicely informed us before hand that the set would take 15 minutes to arrive as they only had one stove. The parathas were worth the wait... More

We are glad we chose to eat at Thilaga. We had a fantastic experience. The food was very delicious. We chose the food recommended by the waiter and it didn't disappoint.

Having had south indian food in over a dozen countries I can certainly say that the food was pretty average, but the fact that this is the only south indian restaurant in town makes it worthwhile!

Now I'm an Indian food expert. My husband I have lived in India. We know it and we love it. This is by far the best Indian food I've ever eaten. The curry is so delicious. The spices in the curry is pure magic. Expect the best! I can't believe I had to come to Japan, Kyoto of all places... More

We came here in December 2014 and had a great time. We were a bug group and the staff were very accommodating. Highly recommended.

This is the only place I've found in Kyoto serving genuine South Indian food (dosa, vada, rasam, pongal, etc.). As such, it's fair to say it's the best South Indian food in Kyoto. Compared to the food you actually get in South India it's not the greatest, but if you're in Kyoto and in the mood for masala dosa this... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
