I was really disappointed with the meals we got here. Our lunch which consisted of 2 pancakes and some udon noodles cost over 4500 yen. It was definitely nothing special, they were very thin and almost crepe like. I felt it was not worth the price. The cafe is cute though and the outlook is nice.

We saw this restaurant was close to our hotel having received good reviews - so tried it on impulse - had to join the queue but were advised by customers leaving that it was worth the wait. It was! A good choice of options given the size of the establishment and very enthusiastic staff/owners. Very efficient - orders taken whilst... More

Enjoyed noodles at Gion Tanto, quick & tasty food cooked on hot plate in front of you. English menu available so easy to choose. Great location in side laneway off the busy Gion Main Street. Lovelly area close to canals.

Visiting Gion? Hungry? Looking for authentic setting and cuisine? Oh and excellent taste, selection and efficiency? STOP right where you are. You will not regret the wait. If you are a hefty eater as well, simply order the extra helping. By the way I am a very picky eater and I left full filled and this restaurant will exceed your... More

I had such a delicious meal here with a friend: we shared an order of udon noodles as well as the okonomiyaki. It was truly delicious and well worth the wait! (Reservations were not possible). Highly recommended...and in a lovely little corner of Gion as well!

Spectacular Japanese restaurant. The food was sensational. Had to go back three nights till there was an opening. Go early to avoid disappointment. We had the seafood okonomiyaki , the special mixed grill and seafood special fried rice ... all incredibly flavoursome. Not the cheapest nor most expensive night out in Kyoto but definitely the tastiest. Highly recommended. 5 star... More

We, (our group consisted of 6 people), stumbled upon this place while looking for another place recommended by an app I was using. Gion Tanto is a cozy little eatery where you sit cross-legged on the floor. The table consists of a teppanyaki-style heatable sheet of steel. We didn't know much about ordering Japanese food but some went ahead anyway... More

Quick served. Worth waiting for a 'seat'. Had beef and evening later shrimp. All very good. I recommend this place.

We'd been walking around Gion and stumbled upon this great little place while looking for something to eat. We had no idea what we were in for, but we were feeling brave and looking for a new experience. Ordering off the menu was easy as there was English. We ordered a special pancake and mixed udon noddle plus two beers.... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
