Our lunch here was an absolute highlight of our trip to Kyoto and Japan so far. The food and presentation were exquisite and the service outstanding. Each dish did truly lead up to the next, and the buildup was never disappointing but always a complete delight. We cannot recommend it enough. It was worth every penny!

In fairness, this was my only kaiseki restaurant I tried in Kyoto. There seemed to be varying reviews for others and I erred by playing it safe here given the mostly positive feedback. Pricey but really good. The presentation was just as impressive as the food. I understood that this was a little more avant-garde or modern for cuisine vs... More

This is now my favourite dining place but come with a hungry and empty stomach. We took the 10,000y lunch set and did we enjoy the full course meal. They had prepare an English menu and the counter staff speak simple English to explain the food. Service was excellent and quality of food was superior. We could have skip dinner.... More

This restaurant serves a modernized version of traditional kaiseki in a casual setting. They have a counter with 10 seats, and a few tatami seating areas and private rooms. I was here for dinner and had a counter seat, which I really enjoyed. Some of the chefs also speak English. They have several set course menus, and I had chosen... More

The dinner presented what seemed like an endless assortment of brilliant colors and flavors. In the end, we couldn't do justice to the food because we were so full. The richness of the food (duck liver pate, abalone, sea urchin, baby tuna....) added to the feeling of a surfeit of food. The service was impeccable. Each item on the menu... More

Kikunoi is such a famous restaurant in Kyoto, and so highly praised, it's difficult to find much new or original to say about it. A meal here- mine was lunch - really is an experience of food transformed into high art, and it is a meal you will not soon forget. Looking at the menu I brought home and taped... More

Not cheap but what an experience! I took my wife were for her birthday. We were given a private room which was so much fun. The food was amazing and the service even better. If you've got the cash do it!

First time to this place and I am highly recommending it. Reservation is necessary and no last minute cancellation as pre-preparation is needed, catered to your specific diet restrictions. Had the lunch kaiseki and if was amazing. Some of the rather interesting ones to me are: 1) Yuzu flavoured one with tofu skin (infused with mushrooms) and folded into a... More

We were lucky to get 2 counter seats on a Sunday night at fairly short notice through our hotel. Easy to miss the entrance, but our friends ate there the night before and pointed it out to us. All of us at the counter were foreigners, but we could hear happy Japanese voices coming from the rooms. I guess you... More

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
