This restaurant was recommended by our hotel (Granvia Kyoto) and they made the reservation for us. We were lucky to get counter seating which is really lovely overlooking the canal and cherry blossoms whilst being able to watch your chef at work. Our chef was very friendly and the service was excellent. The beef was absolutely outstanding. The whole experience... More

Wow! This place was an amazing find. The food was mouth wateringly delicious. The personal service was amazing. Friendly chefs and the owners were simply gorgeous and super friendly. If you want to splash out on a special dinner I can't recommend Mikaku highly enough.

Good value Teppanyaki restaurant in the heart of Gion. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Beef was delicious and very tasty but accompaniments were meagre and mediocre.

Went here for a Kobe beef dinner. The place serves A4 grade of Kobe. A portion of teppanyaki has 100g, it does not sound much but is more than enough for 1 person, even if you are hungry. The taste is excellent, it simply melts in your mouth. This is however an expensive enjoyment. Paying 80EUR for 100g sounds and... More

Our hotel recommended this restaurant as a top steak/hibachi place in Kyoto which maybe the case. However, the food and service was very mediocre, but for the price this is simply not the place to go. 3 people, 3 steaks, and 6 sakes was ~ 600 usd or 65,400 yen and the quality of food and service would have been... We visited on the spur of the moment on our first night in Kyoto, without realising it was also the restaurant our Hotel (Mume) had recommended. It's a Husband and Wife team, both extremely welcoming, and the speciality is Teppanyaki Kobe. We shared a fillet and sirloin, and it really was the best beef we've ever had, melt in your... More

This was my first experience of tasting Kobe beef and the chefs pulled out all of the stops and served us this delicacy in 4 different ways. Each equally as good as the next. Not sure how I will ever go back to Zambian beef after this! If you can get in, you have to experience this establishments food experience.

Mikaku is consistently our favorite place for Wagyu style beef in Kyoto. The owner is front and center, and when you order the beef he presents you with a sheet showing the place of orgin, the marble fat content, and even the cow’s name. His wife is a lovely hostess and drink server, the granddaughter of a sake maker. Her... More

This was a recommendation of our hotel and we were go happy we had a chance to visit. The food is prepared right in front of you and it was some of the best beef we had on our trip -- and there is a lot of good beef to be had in Japan. At the end, they prepare fried... More

This place is a tourist trap. It's as simple as that. You only see tourists. It's VERY EASY to eat better somewhere else.

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
