I usually go for grainier breads but this place does good bakery items I'm happy to give grainy breads a break. We bought the 3 variety mixed chestnut bread, the croissant, Gorgonzola and walnut stick, the rye and raisin bread and the cranberry and macadamia bun. Hubby had the croissant the following day and unfortunately it's gone soft. The chestnut... More

OK, I'll admit it, we had breakfast here nearly every morning. Why? Because it is comfortable, with tasty food, and good coffee. Come in, put your name on the waiting list, choose a couple of fine pastries, order your eggs, and enjoy your breakfast with endless bread service. We enjoyed this cafe.

Stopped in for an afternoon coffee and pastry: while the coffee was nothing to write home about, the baked goods were exceptional with special recommendations to the chestnut filled pastry and the apple turnovers.

We too are surprised by the rave reviews. It's not that the place is bad. It isn't. But if what you're looking for is a really good American breakfast, or even a really good French breakfast, you won't find it here. It will be a fair to good Japanese version instead. If you order the French toast, you'll get one... More

Opens early(0700) fast friendly efficient service. Great scrambled eggs with toast and salad and refills on coffee and on bread if you get the set with "bread basket". We ate there every day!

Shinshindo is a bakery. They sell breads and have cafe. Eggs Benedict breakfast is also avsilable for heavy user. You can bring breads you buy at the bakery to the table in cafe to eat with other foods and drinks. Waitress speaks English, no problem. Many foreigners seem to love this place.

We came here for a Friday morning breakfast around 9am. Nearly all other patrons were tourists, even though the place doesn't give off a touristy vibe. I honestly felt like I was at a hotel restaurant. That aside, the food was good. You can see the chefs baking things, and they frequently refresh the stock of fresh baked goods to... More

Just before the Gion Matsuri parade started, we had to take still breakfast and fortunately we spotted this boulangerie. We went inside, all tables were taken. There was a waiting list, you put your name to the list and they will seat you when it is your turn. I was a bit worried that the list would be long but... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
