Kyoto is full of amazing restaurants, but Gion Matsudaya is an extremely unique dining experience. Firstly, the sashimi is out of this world delicious and without a doubt the best in Kyoto. Every bite surpassed the previous bite and was beyond satisfying. The most impressive...More

A small but very cozy sushi restaurant in the Gion district, in the center of Kyoto. Beautiful sashimi and sushi in the performance of the wonderful chef Kazunori Matsuda We really did not want to leave!

Gion Matsudaya was recommended to us by our hotel, Hotel Mume, when we asked them where to go for sushi. Before arriving to Japan, we really wanted to eat some good sushi. But, you won't get good sushi here, you'll get GREAT sushi at Gion...More

We were fortunate to stumble upon this well hidden gem on a night open seats were available. No review can do this place justice—the Edo-style omakase here was simply delectable! Master Chef Matsudaya and his wife were wonderful hosts, keeping our cups full, conversations warm,...More

This is a very expensive restaurant, but if you are looking for a unique sushi/sashimi experience in Kyoto, this is the place! Only 7 seats and very nice hosts! Exciting food!

We were excited about the meal at Gion Sushi and arrived ahead of time. They started our meal shortly thereafter. We just had sushi prefix and overall it was quite good; however, it did not "wow" me. For 200+ a head it needed to have...More

Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko"
in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and
entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners,
Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with
gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the
streets on their way to and from work, where they fan
dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion

I think they are only open for dinner, and you probably need your hotel concierge to make reservation for you. Some of the restaurants don't take walk ins.
