- The restaurant is not so easy to find. - It's quite small, I would say maximum 30 seats around tables or at the bar. - This restaurant doesn't accept credit card, you have to pay by cash only. = I found it a bit expensive but it goes with the quality of the dishes. So I put a more... More

If took us 15 minutes of concerted effort to find this delightful French gem but we are glad we persisted. We located it in a lane way just east of the canal. On the third floor. Not a restaurant that you are going to stumble onto. Hopefully the photo provided will assist those who wish to track this delight down.... More

Really nice spot with a great menu- we tried a variety of French / European dishes and everything tasted good! The owner does everything himself, quite a feat!

hidden gem, chef speaks a little French, staff seems new so be patient but they are nice. Definitely order 2 plates per person . About 8-10 usd per plate. Here's my opinion of everything we ordered: Scallop tartare- too creamy not great presentation. I didn't like it but my mom loved it Smoked ham- from Spain! Cut on the bar... More

We walked by this restaurant when checking out restaurants on the Pontocho and wouldn't have given it a second thought as the English menus posted outside didn't have photos and the descriptions didn't sound that exciting. But then I saw a poster on the door (in my photos) which explained their concept and they seemed keen on serving English speaking... More

We stumbled across this restaurant in Pontocho Alley on our last night in Kyoto, and what a pleasant surprise it turned out to be. Having survived the lift to the third floor, we found this tiny restaurant with one chef and one waitress. The cuisine is French/Japanese and the menu was in English which is always a good start. We... More

We liked this little restaurant very much. Nice food but you need a few dishes to fill your stomach. We had the beef, salad, pasta, shrimps, etc. Small glasses of wine.

The French restaurant my partner wanted to go to was closed so we happened across this place. Expectations were pretty low, having gone up to the third floor of some building in a dingy elevator. The waiter didn't appear to have started his shift yet as the chef seated us and took our orders. Waiter rocked up about half an... More

We went there by chance and with no specific expectations. This was great it's a small place with a few tables and a counter, the chef and the waiter are very helpful and most importantly the food is great. We had japanese steak, cooked perfectly, ratatouille, chicken and creme brulee. All was an interesting interpretation of french food with a... More

Very reasonably priced, exquisite French food with a Kyoto twist. We stumbled upon this treasure and would highly recommend it. We had ratatouille followed by duck with eggplant and it was incredibly fresh, as well as beautifully presented. The waiter was also the chef and could not have been more sweet. English & French spoken and there is an English... More

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
