My husband and I had a great meal here recently for our 40th wedding anniversary. The food was both innovative and intriguing, and the wonderful staff made sure that we had a happy and fun time to remember. The food consists of a variety of tasty morsels that are deep fried, but not greasy or oily, and presented to you... More

We sat at the bar and enjoyed 20 different small fried dishes ... Prawn, pork, beef, seafood and cheese. The dessert was a flavour blast at the end. Very stylish and the staff are wonderful ... So cool too. Enjoy

Unexpected, luxury bites, don't think twice. Approx USD 60 per person, incl wines etc. plan to spend an evening. Eat slow, the bites are very hot :)

This place served us the best kushikatsu / kushiage I've eaten so far. The restaurant looks quite formal and is certainly geared towards fine dining, so I was quite surprised that I managed to secure a booking for our family with 2 toddlers. The restaurant is made up of one long bar counter where the chefs cook the skewers in... More

Kushi-Katsu(deep fried skewers) is one of my favorite kind of Japanese food. I often go there not only with my family but also visitors from the US and they all love it. Great reasons to go there; 1) wonderful taste and presentation They serve one Kushi (skewer) at a time as they deep fry in the open kitchen. Each Kushi... More

Like a previous reviewer, we visited this amazing restaurant after seeing it in the Wallpaper Guide for Kyoto. After taking in the sights of Gion in the evening, this was the perfect venue to relax with an intimate yet exciting dining experience. The service was excellent throughout, with friendly, English-speaking staff who kept returning to serve one golden bite-size parcel... More

We saw this restaurant in the 'Wallpaper' guide for Kyoto, and decided to give it a go. A quick search on this site only revealed one review - Peewee L's accurate rundown - so thought we'd add another. The restaurant is located on a fairly busy street, and many of the other places have some pretty garish signage; perhaps this... More

I like katsu and yakitori so I figured eating deep-fried skewered food would be a treat. I was right. The restaurant was recommended by the hotel concierge. The food was presented in a particular sequence and the server would explain each dish as she served it. The meal was accompanied by a raw vegetable salad (carrots, cabbage, celery, radish, etc..)... Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
