Provides a excellent taste of modern Japanese style food with powerful flavors and left me wanting more. I also returned to this restaurant 4 years ago and I returned as soon as I got a chance! I have tried many of there dishes and loved every single one of them! The staff made me feel welcome and I enjoyed every... More

Taste so normal but the portion is really small!! Not recommended at all and dont visit this restaurant ever. There is additional charges 300 yen per person. The grilled fish is equal with 2 pieces of lays chips, the beef has only 6 tiny slices. Not recommended!!

I don't see all the hype for this place.. We have been there tonight attracted by the all-5-stars reviews and the nice position.. Well food is good and the personnel is kind but the furniture and ambient are below average of the area, price is pretty high and portions are .. Well.. Miniscule!! So if the question is about food... More

We found this place by accident on our last Saturday night out in Kyoto in Pontocho alley, and we were not disappointed. All the food had great flavour, but especially the sirloin steak - never have we had meat that literally melts in your mouth, it was amazing. Expect to pay around the ¥20,000 mark for 3 to 4 people... More

**Look for a metallic sign on the right side of the doorway with "Kyosikian" written on it in smallish print** Super friendly staff and delicious food. The chef would pop a peek at us as we tried each of the dishes; they clearly really care about the quality of the food they are producing. The restaurant was also very relaxing;... More

Three of us booked late and had to sit at the bar in front of the chef, rather than at a table but this didn't bother us in the slightest. Menu in English provided and the staff tried to engage in conversation as they were a friendly bunch. We worked our way through about 9 dishes and they were gorgeous.... More

We are so glad we found this place through tripadvisor, with few, but good reviews. We both took course menu, and each dish was delicious - seared tuna was perfect, beef was so soft, and sashimi was melting in our mouths. We came on Thursday, and it was pretty empty, no need to wait.

The cook/owner and his staff tried their very best to make yourself feel at home. If you like to have a more local experience than those that are more touristy at ponchoto, this will be a good start. Simple tasty local cuisine, if you like something friendly for a start, certainly the option to go for!

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
