Better than most Kristang food I've had even in Melaka, this place is quite good, if pricy. My only advice would be stick to the Portuguese/Malay dishes, as the dishes that are similar to Nyonya dishes (like kangkung belacan, and the sambal buah keluak) aren't quite as good as their Nyonya counterparts. The Semur, a sour and creamy beef stew... More

Place was a bit difficult to find (first time in KL!) but had a good time. Very homely, cosy environment. Owner wasn't in but service was very friendly. Good good at a fairly reasonable price.

My husband and I had cincalok fritters; Assam laksa; and vegetarian curry debal. The food was great! Mel came to speak to us and she is just such a down to earth friendly person. When she found out that I was a vegetarian - out came complementary onion fitters. The atmosphere is also really cosy with a lot of framed... More

The food was acceptable quality but only one member of staff was remotely friendly . The worst aspect was that there was a family of 8, four of which were noisy children playing with the toys provided by the restaurant . I can see that the toys are useful but as the family had finished eating the children just carried... More

Food was pleasant to the eye and to the taste buds. Price was mid-range to slightly on the pricey side. Service was reasonable. Owner was not in. We had dinner -lemongrass chicken, seabass, and curry laksa. We also bought back an assortment of jars of homemade sauces eg lemongrass chicken sauce etc; and homemade kaya. I would come again to... The food was just ok. For lunch (weekday), was informed that only the set lunches were available. Find it disappointing as would have preferred more options. Ordered the nasi lemak with assam prawns. The prawns were countable and small and the flesh was dry. However, the flavour was good. Would like to try the other options besides lunch sets.

Hi MisheruT, Thanks for your feedback! I guess you would have visited us somewhere between 12-24th July...I am sorry that you were offered the limited menu during this time. Mel was away for her youngest daughter's wedding in Germany and we made the decision to serve a limited menu while she was away. This was done to ensure that the... More

I was pleasantly surprised by their wide selection of lunch sets. I had the Nasi Lemak and my husband had the Devil Curry Rice set. We ordered a Chicken Seybah ala carte for us to share. The food was a healthy wholesome serving of wonderful Portugese food. I would definitely be making another trip here to try some of the... More

We had the pleasure of meeting Mel while dining. Mel is pleasant and personable. We enjoyed the curry dishes including the baked fish. It takes about half-hour, be sure to plan ahead if you're time conscious. The belacan Kang Kong is also a favorite.

This was the first time my family and I tried Kristang food. I personally felt the food tasted very "homely" and delicious. We "swept clean" all the 9 dishes we ordered and could not resist the sago gula melaka and salted gula melaka ice-cream. Mel the owner is a fantastic hostess who had no reservation to share her culinary experiences... More

Description
MEET MEL...“I remember it so clearly…I was 8 years old. We lived in an area in Malacca known as Garden City at the time. My mother gave me a book on baking called ‘Sally’s Recipes’. I chose the Ginger Cake to be my very first solo baking experience. The result was more than a well-turned out cake! All our neighbours and friends enjoyed it so much. This experience I had creating something myself, that was enjoyed by so many, led me to discover my passion for cooking and baking.I remember my mother as being the person who nurtured my love for baking and cooking. She was incredible, strong and capable. Eurasian in every sense of the word.Christmas and almost every other get-together was spent with family and friends, with me cooking and baking and adding to the already extensive menu my mother would have created. While many have offered their generous compliments, I’ll tell you why I think what I make is special. Everything I make, comes made with a little bit of ‘me’.I realize that I have much to give and share. Each dish or cake I make is an extension of myself, my heart and my love. The feelings I experience when creating something, knowing it will be enjoyed, feeds my soul. It is like none other. This is why I cook and bake. It always has been, it always will be”.-Mel

I found this after i wrote review, why couldn't Mel put this on their official webpage

Mother Theresa said "A sacrifice, to be real, must cost, must hurt, must empty ourselves. The fruit of Silence is prayer. The fruit of Prayer is faith. The fruit of Faith is love. The fruit of Love is service. The fruit of Service is peace."

Exactly 2 days ago I closed my first deal. My first real business deal. The culmination of 5 and a half years of ... I'm not quite sure what to call it. All I know is, somebody felt that what I have built from nothing to something is..pretty amazing. Here's the catch..I built it not for myself. I built it for my mother. I built Simply Mel's.

"You should be happy and proud that you did this for me" she answered.

I had asked her..."what do I get?"

How does one say goodbye to an era?

In the early years of the business my 2 sisters were also part of the startup. However, their paths in their own journey of life have led them elsewhere. I am the last one standing.

Separately, I credit the financial success to the sanity of my husband who kept the business in line and always on track, regardless of the ongoing family dramas and feuds he had to endure!

In my quest to find closure i turned to the Higher Power, and that was when these words of mother Theresa resonated with me. "The fruit of service is peace". Peace. Yes, God please grant me this elusive Peace.

Over the course of our Simply Mel's journey as a family and as business partners (the lines were very blurry indeed) there has been laughter, tears, joy... and a whole lot of heartache. Countless times I had wanted to end it, countless times I 'fired' my mother (in true Donald Trump style!), She fired me too i suppose, in her own way by telling me not to come in anymore; yet somehow, we both still showed up the next day (sometimes the day after), it never really felt right to end like that.

It feels right now. On 11 June 2016 I received a call that would change the course of our lives. It was YTL. The giant conglomerate YTL. They wanted Chef Melba to be at their YTL property The Majestic Malacca, and they wanted no less. Yes, it seems what I built was that good.

Thus began 6 and abit more of months of emails, calls, meetings, proposals, lawyers, immigration, negotiations, face time... The whole nine yards. Meanwhile we commenced preparations to wind up. The Sphere, our Simply Mel's home, was to cease existence early 2017. Thankfully, the tough decision to close was made for us.

I digress a little. Since I was a little girl, I have always been fond of St Francis Xavier, a man very real to me, who had a love for Malacca, as I do. He has always been my 'go-to Saint', unfailing in every manner. My fondest childhood memories are from time spent in Malacca with my maternal grandparents, and I frequently recall the story of how st Francis Xavier lost his favorite rosary and was heartbroken only to be overcome with joy when a crab brought it back to him on the beach. I asked him to intercede for me in my dealings with YTL.

On the day of our final meeting at the Majestic Malacca, i was enjoying a cappuccino in the lobby (yes they have great coffee)... there he was! A piece of artwork of the Holy saint himself, silently and unassumingly hanging on the wall in front of me, looking directly at me. So silent was he, among all sorts of other paintings, yet his gaze spoke a thousand words to my heart. Oddly enough, he was the only 'person' there. I wonder how I had missed him there before.

In hindsight, it is uncanny how the chain of events over the past few months appear to be no less than a perfectly orchestrated plan by a higher power indeed. What seemed random, really wasn't.

The past 5 and a half years of sacrifice (I call it sacrifice for many reasons) well, this is my gift to my mother. I am glad my humble gift is compounded by an even bigger gift from YTL, and they have promised me they will take care of mum.

I am pleased she is able to continue to do what she loves - to make others happy through her food. I know she is secretly apprehensive at the notion of having a 'real job' as she calls it, but i also know that my mother does not deliver anything less than excellence! From here on, she will be known as YTL Celebrity Chef 'Melba at the Mansion'. Magnificent indeed. YTL are lucky (not to mention very clever indeed) that they have her.

It is now time to cut the umbilical cord ..my filial duty is done, making her 'dream' come true, as she so often tells everyone she meets. By the Grace of God, and through the powerful intercession of my beloved Saint, I shall soon find my Peace.

As for Simply Mel's, it will be the birth of something new. I will take it with me and share it with the world...New plans, a new direction, a new partner in crime, but above all, continuing on my mother's quest (and her dream) to proudly leave behind a precious legacy of our elusive Malacca-Portuguese heritage.
