Meatloaf is truly amazing, and the most unique recipe as they use chorizo. The guacamole is also excellent, perhaps the best in Birmingham. Margaritas are okay; they are more traditional Mexican-style, meaning not sweet, but the bartender was very obliging in adding some extra Cointreau for us. This is a crowded place depending on what's going on downtown on a... More

Our food was delicious! We arrived shortly before 5 pm. We were served promptly by a very nice young man who was well prepared to provide excellent service. We all loved our meals and we were out shortly after 6 pm to head to our concert.

Our first visit to ElBarrio but definitely not the last!!! We went to the Bham Home & Garden Show and was hungry afterward. Friends had recommended ElBarrio and this was our first opportunity to visit. My husband order the shrimp quesadilla, I order the pork carnitas. Both were excellent. The shrimp were exceptional!!! We also had a margarita and a... More

The food here was excellent. We are all still talking about the Pork Barbacoa. The flavors combined together perfectly. And our waiter was super friendly and helpful with menu recommendations.

We went there on a Saturday evening with a group of friends. Had to wait for about 40 minutes to sit. There are no places to sit and wait (only a small bench outside), so everybody was either by the bar or on the sidewalk outside. My husband got some drinks at the bar and complained about the wait there.... More

I had heard El Barrio usually had a wait, but we went for a late lunch and had a lovely time. The service was friendly and efficient; and the food was fresh, tasty and unique. Pork carnitas were cooked perfectly and not dried out at all. We definitely plan to make this a usual lunch place!!

This place was great. The food was better than amazing. The atmosphere was uplifting and outgoing. We meet several new people while we were there. Shortly after opening, there was already a line because of the popularity of the restaurant. While exploring the city, we asked several people about the restaurant, they said it wouldn't disappoint, which it didn't! They... More

Excellent Mexican food in a very cool setting - vintage old store front converted to restaurant with warm ambience. We were there on a Thursday night and the pork tamales were superb - $4 draught beer also on Thursdays. Waiter was awesome and happy to prep items as the kids wanted them. Order the guacamole and salsa, both are very... More

Same menu for lunch or dinner, don't dig that. The portion was good as far as enough food, but expensive for lunch. Chips, salsa and guacamole were fresh and flavorful. Service was ok, did have to ask for water refill a couple of times. Other folks at table had chicken and steak tacos and everyone was happy with theirs. Trendy... More

Didn't expected to find a good Mexican restaurant in Birmingham and went there for lunch by chance. But what a pleasant surprise! We had chicken thighs over grits - excellent! The chicken is a bit over cooked for my taste, but the gravy is outstanding. Especially with grits. The pork tacos were also very good. The meat is very juicy... More
