Very good value for money Japanese food in Melaka

Good quality Japanese food at very reasonable prices. Wa Zen offers a wide range of Japanese food; both raw and cooked. The restaurant was very crowded when we were there for lunch on a Saturday; mostly locals. Luckily we made a reservation a few days earlier. The attitude of the service staff was pretty good even though the restaurant was very busy. Our food was served within 20 minutes of ordering. I would certainly return to Wa Zen if I would like to have Japanese cuisine the next time I am n Melaka.

Wa....really good food

Followed a friend's recommendation to have dinner here. It was a Thursday evening and restaurant was fully booked. We took the counter seats as walk in. The sashimi platter had thick slices of fish. Food was fantastic.

I could not thank Wonderful enough for having us accommodated on the second floor, when we had no reservations. For that, I highly advise you to make reservations before you go. And yes, Wonderful is the host's name, indeed. This is a Wonderful place. Ultra fresh fish for sushi and sashimi, great Japanese dishes with excellent quality, both washoku and yoshoku, in general better than your average izakaya. Excellent fusion ideas too. There are dishes here to satisfy all tastes, as long as they are good taste. And they are Wonderful!

Underwhelming experience

Having heard and read of Wa Zen’s reputation, I came with high expectations. Visited at 6.00 pm on a Tuesday. The restaurant seemed packed even on a weekday evening. Fortunately, I’d made a reservation for one person and was quickly shown to a small cubicle-style seat. The lighting in restaurant was too dark. I had to use the torchlight function of my mobile phone to read the menu. Wa Zen’s menu does not list down the type of fish used in the sashimi so I had to call a waitress to clarify. There was a button on my table to press for service. Even though there was ample staff on duty, I had to press the button a few times before someone came. Her English was frustratingly poor. I had to request to speak with someone with better English proficiency. The sashimi was okay but Ichi Zen’s version (although costing MYR13 more) was more sumptuous and had far better presentation. Overall, I felt short-changed of the premium Japanese restaurant experience due to: (a) lack of English proficiency of some staff members; (b) the rowdy “fish market” atmosphere; (c) service not being attentive and personalized enough; and (d) the washroom not being clean enough. Ichi Zen gives a better experience in terms of food quality and service standards.

WA ZEN a gem of a restaurant in Melaka, highly recommend.!

What a wonderful surprise finding this gem in Melaka, the food and service 6 star the prices extremely reasonable. Staff polite courteous always ready with a smile, meals delivered promptly. the meals creative fresh and tasty. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the quality of the food so much we went back for dinner!

One of the best quality and authentic Japanese food in Melaka. Atmosphere is good and clean. Prices are mid to high range. And this place is always full especially towards the weekends. Make sure you call first and reserve.

Had to wait for sometime for a table and was given a miserable table at a corner with a table space to fit 2 dishes. It was an uncomfortable experience for dinner. Waiter refused to provide another table. Food was only so so and price on the high side for a small town like Melaka, Not recommended. There are better and cheaper options elsewhere.

The atmosphere of the restaurant was great. Went twice and had to make reservation even on weekdays as business is really good. Food was pleasant. Price was slightly above average.

Enjoyable and good quality

My family had lunch at Wa Zen. We found this place by accident and was pleasantly surprised. The quality of the sashimi was superb and the pricing is reasonable. The grilled hamachi and squid were beyond amazing! Almost every dish we ordered was a hit! Would definitely return.

Portion of sashimi is still quite generous as before, but the dressing is way too much. Garlic fried rice is not nice at all compare to last time. I think Melaka needs a better Japanese restaurant. Ambient is still very good overall.
